Why the heck am I waking up every morning at 4:00?

For about a week now, I have been waking up at 4:00 on the dot. Incidentally, this started at the same time I switched to an apap and an activa.
I'm able to go back to sleep afterwards, but Its really annoying.

Howdy,
This is an occurance that you hear about now and again when working with CPAPers. I do not understand why it happens. Can anyone shed light on this? Does anyone have downloads on this nights it occurred? Has anyone ever compared a "normal 8 hour sleep" download to a "wakes up at 4am consistantly" download?

My sleep tech postulated that if you were used to getting 8 hours of lousy sleep, and are suddenly getting 4 hours of excellent sleep, that your body is saying OK, time to get up! She said it would taper off and I've found that now after 5 months on the cPap, I can sleep 7 full hours. However, I can never get 8 or 9 hours which I used to get, I'm just plain awake after 7.
This has been my theory.winknblinknnod wrote:My sleep tech postulated that if you were used to getting 8 hours of lousy sleep, and are suddenly getting 4 hours of excellent sleep, that your body is saying OK, time to get up! I have been on cpap for a little over four months. I noticed in month two and part of 3 that I would wake up anywhere between 3:30 and 4:30 a couple nights a week. If it was earlier I could get back to sleep, but if closer to 4:30 I could not and it was like a self-imposed snooze on the alarm clock (I go to bed around 9 and get up at 5:15). In the past two to three weeks, it has diminished significantly (only about once or twice in that time, instead of 2 to 4 times per week). Hopefully the explanation is that I am getting caught up on lost sleep. If it occurs again, I will look at the software report for that night to see if there is anything that stands out (although I just got it and am still trying to figure out how to interpret the data).

I had this problem for a couple months after I had been on the hose. It lasted about 6 weeks and gradually got better. I agree that it probably has something to do with my body catching up on sleep. I used to sleep 10-11 hours a day (with naps) and now am fully rested on about 7-7.5 hours and no longer require any naps.wahooker wrote:

(Yeah, I know it's not a full 8 hours. But with 6 month old twins, I don't get to decide when I go to bed each night, nor do I have a choice about when to get up to go to work.)
I had sleep apnea for alot of years before I was diagnosed, cause I had never heard of it until I saw a news article about it one night. Thinking back, I would have been in heaven to have been on the hose when my twin daughters were young. Getting up 3 times a night to feed, not getting to bed until 11pm. Having to be up at 6am for work. Yea, it would have been nice to get quality sleep during those times They are almost 14 now, so there's other things keeping me awake at night now
I've been on cpap for almost 6 weeks now and I usually go to sleep about 11 pm during the work week and arouse a little around 4:30, go back to sleep for another hour and then get up. Did not do this before cpap...but was probably "waking up all night", just didn't realize it.

Awsome............ unreal how this affects CPAP people.
I do exactly the same thing. I get up around 4:30 or 5:00 and almost exactly on the dot....... I can get back to sleep most often but sometimes NOT! This can be annoying.
I tried sleeping without my mask a night or two and I fel lousy after only a few nights and did not wake up at those wierd hours.
I too only need about 6.5 to 7 hours of CPAP sleep now whereas before 9 wouldnt do the job.
Ya gotta love this sight where we can compare notes like this eh?

johnny,
I can't say that I've had a "normal" 8 hours sleep in the past few years... let alone when I've been on the hose. But... I recently posted some encore reports in another thread 'cause I was trying to figure out what pressure I needed... I've been waking up about 430AM... so I have the reports of when it is happening.

The original poster said this problem started when he switched to an APAP. I wonder if the problem has anything to do with a deep REM cycle. My apnea/hypopneas are much worse during REM and, therefore, the machine raises the pressure to deal with them. If you are not used to this sometimes rather sudden rise in pressure, that might be what is waking you up. If a person goes to bed regularly at the same time every night and has pretty predictable sleep cycles, then a REM cycle could be occurring about the same time each morning. Just a thought!!
