Sleep Apnea Surgery

Post by colston » Thu Sep 07, 2006 3:47 pm

Dear CPAP Friends,

The results of my surgery (somnoplasty of the tongue
and the removal of my adenoids) of 6/30/06 are in.

My stoppages of breathing each hour have been
reduced to 26 from the previous 65.

During my sleep study on 9/28/06, the cpap
was utilized for 1/2 the night. The oxygen
content of my blood was 80% when off the
cpap, it was 63% prior to surgery (which is
considered very bad).

My cpap pressure was reduced to 8 from
the previous 9. Dr. Pearson (my sleep specialist)
said it could be set within a range of 4 to 8.

The second stage of surgery (called UP3) is
scheduled for 9/22/06 at the Mt. Nittany Medical
Center. Dr. Kao says there is a 79% overall cure
rate for this procedure. If I can experience an even greater
reduction of my apneas, then that would be very good,
but a cure would be fabulous!

So my odyssey with sleep apnea, which started in the
Summer of 2005 continues.

Dr. Kao (of State College Pennsylvania) is one of only
a few doctors in the USA who does these surgeries.

Please contact me directly for contact information.

Respectively yours,
Keith C. Ford

Congrats to you, Keith !
As I understand it, such good results are not always the case.
Hope the pain wassn't too bad! I wish you continued success with the next procedure! Who knows, maybe you'll be rendered pap-free?
