Two (2) auto CPAP units.

Post by inquirer » Thu Sep 07, 2006 12:37 pm

I've got 2 new PB420E units. I've decided to have 2 instead of 1 so that I can have a back-up machine in case one breaks down. I use the machine here in Saudi Arabia where I am a contract worker. Anyhow my question is: Should I alternate using the machines, say switching it every 3 months; or, just keep the other until one gives up or needs repair? Don't know anything about electrical or electronics. Need your wise advice, please.

It really depends on how your store your extra machine. If you are constantly moving it then I would take it out every once in a while to see if it is functioning. The autos do adapt to how you breath, so this would be another reason to try it out once in awhile. Since parts may be a problem where you are at, saving it as a hot back up would make a lot of sense. While CPAPs seem to last for a long time, it is best to have one with little wear on its parts if you can.

Your biggest risk with just using one primary machine is not the wear on the machine but pulling it off the night stand and cracking something. Most people end up using their second machine for travel so they don't have to mess with their home set up. This gives you an opportunity to test it out on occasion, but does subject it to more movement.

Just my two cents.

Second Machine

Mike, you make a lot of sense in suggesting that one be used for travel. It is not for me to say about how often to use the second one. I've only had my CPAP a little over 4 months.

However, the only nights I've not been compliant are those when I traveled and forgot something; either the whole CPAP bag or something crucial like the hose (having just cleaned it, it was hung up to dry and not with the machine).

Would it not be nice if the machines, et. al., were designed to have fewer parts? Simpler is better.
