Would it help if I said that the exercise will do ya good?

I've had lots of knee problems BEFORE I started on CPAP. Have been taking a couple of aspirin before bed.....for years.....seems to help (and they've been recommending taking aspirin for a long time as a preventative for heart/stroke). Since being on CPAP, some of my aches and pains have begun to diminish.
Within the last two months, I started taking a daily "cocktail" of Certo and grape juice, which seems to be helping A LOT. About a tablespoon of (liquid) Certo in about 8 ounces of grape juice.

Best wishes,

Muscle soreness

Post by birdshell » Tue Sep 05, 2006 8:30 pm

As a physical education teacher, I have some thoughts. It would be helpful to have more information: How often have you been running? For how long each time?

I seriously believe that the CPAP use is not the problem. My suspicion is that you are exercising too much before your body is ready for it.

Any exercise will cause breakdown of the muscle tissue that is used. These micro-tears need time to recover. When they recover, the muscle slowly rebuilds with more strength. Most workout programs are designed to work different muscles in alternation, for example: the lower body one day, and the upper body the next, and to continue alternating.

Cross-training may be valuable, too. That means choosing different activities and mixing them up. For example, run and swim one week; swim and bicycle the next; etc.

Aspirin does help with inflammation, but in the case of a serious injury could cause more bleeding (and therefore more swelling). Swelling is the body's way of immobilizing the injury, but also causes much of the pain.

Stretching the muscles used will help that feeling of tightness. I believe that the muscles seem to cramp a little when they feel tight, but this is only based on personal feeling and experience. Stretching the muscle and holding the stretch for at least 6-8 seconds will help any cramping to release. The stretching helps me to be more comfortable when my muscles are tight.

Regular stretching after exercise (or at least after being warmed up) is most effective at lengthening muscles. Stretching the muscles is important to help avoid injury. Ask any of the football players with ruptured or torn Achilles tendons if they should have stretched more!

Warming up has been debated for many years. It is done primarily because it seems to help prevent injuries. I like to think of humans as animals, and equate what is done with horses, for example. They are warmed up and cooled down. It cannot hurt to do so when we exercise, and may help.

Here are some links to short, easily understood articles written by the sports medicine contributor to the Merck Manual:

Link to: Causes of Muscle Soreness

Link to: Warming Up Does NOT Avoid Muscle Soreness

Link to: Stretching Does NOT Prevent Muscle Soreness

Link to: Exercise E-zine

I hope this helps!

BTW: Den/Wulfman, thanks for reminding me of the grape juice/Certo remedy. I'd forgotten. I doubt if that will help with weulfman's problem, though, because arthritis generally occurs only in the joints. It is worth a try for me. There have been a lot of anecdotal reports of success with this, and I'm feeling the loss of Vioxx on the market. (I'm not suffering the lack of risk for strokes that it caused, though! )

Sorry, I took the red section above to mean you had started running.

Any change in job will generally cause the use of different muscles. Thinking about what one has done during the new job will often tell what is making the difference.

Even though you were more active in the retail job, you are probably using different muscles to do something--like pushing back a chair from the desk and/or standing up. If you are like many other office workers, you push that chair all over to answer phones, get back to the filing cabinet, turn to use the computer, etc.

It is surprising how something one hardly notices can cause muscle soreness. Even an imbalance can cause a problem. That is one of the major causes of back pain. Folks do not have strength in their abdominal muscles to match the opposite strength in their back muscles.

In any case I find that after doing more than usual, the stretching exercises help. The following link shows sketches of how to do each stretch, and pretty much shows the standard stretching "workout".

VERY IMPORTANT is to GO ONLY AS FAR AS YOU CAN HOLD COMFORTABLY FOR 8-10 SECONDS (MINIMUM). 15 SECONDS IS BETTER. AVOID BOUNCING WHEN STRETCHING. (This was a technique that was proven to work AGAINST good stretching [or lengthening] of the muscle.)

Good luck. Please let us know how it goes for you.

Several of us who use AOL have had trouble posting, but since you are not one--we cannot tell you what has worked for us and have it work for you.

Sorry.
