Auto Bi-Pap versus Bi-Pap

Post by JLFitzfamily » Sun Sep 23, 2007 5:21 pm

I had to send my Respironics Bi-Pap Pro 2 with bi-flex in for service, and was given a rental by my DME provider. I as given a Respironics M Series Bi-Pap Auto set for conventional Bi-Pap at 12/7. I used it for about 2 weeks, and when it became evident I may have to purchase another machine I asked by MD for a new prescription. He sent me one for the Auto machine at 25/4. I changed the settings on my loaner to Auto and set it up per my prescription. I don't have a card reader, but my AHI during the 7 day period on straight Bi-Pap was .7, and on Auto it was 1.8. Both are low and indicate the therapies are working, but why would it be higher on the Auto? If I have to buy a new machine I'd rather save the $500 and go with a straight Bi-Pap over the Auto if there's no significant theraputical difference. Compliance is not an issue.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Thank you!

Horsepuckies! If you read each post in this thread you'll know how to access the Clinician's Menu. Follow RestedGal's "suggestion" that you write EVERYTHING down as you go thru the Menu, just in case you inadvertently change something you shouldn't have or didn't want to.

Then you can go thru and make which changes you want but will have the information written down to reset it to the original scripted, DME set settings.

The best thing is to make no more than one change a week. Watch the weekly average of data before making the next change. And you can use ANY mask your beating little heart desires in CPAP or APAP mode. A quick e-mail to Resmed asking what the allowed leak rate for your Mask Selection at your scripted pressure is should satisfy your concerns.

For instance: the Standard mask selection allowed leak rate at 8 cms is .24 L/s or .4 L/m.

Then check your mask's literature for the allowed leak rate at your pressure. Actually, today's CPAPs can compensate for considerably more leak than you would expect. In a straight CPAP mode of 8 cms and a large leak rate I've had my Resmed S8 Elite actually produce up to 10.2 cms of pressure at a time my leak rate hit 1.08!!

Just walk through the clinical menu, writing down every word, every number, every symbol you see, so that you can go back to the original settings if you change something later and don't like it.
I too like the idea of writing things down, esp. when it comes to changing things.

Before I re-invent the wheel - I wonder if anyone has already made a set-up sheet to record previous settings? Just thought I'd ask.
Thanks,

You mean like this?
Just copy to a document in your computer and either print or make notations on the document.

Den

REMstar Auto w/C-Flex Setup

When in the Setup Menu, the humidifier ^ and ramp v buttons operate as up and down keys to change the settings, the left/right user buttons < > allow you to go to the previous/next question or setting, and the pressure start/stop button is used to exit the Setup Menu. Holding the humidifier or ramp buttons down will cause the values to change more quickly.

To enter the Therapy Setup Menu, hold the two top user buttons < > down while plugging in the power cord.
Continue holding the buttons down until the REMstar Auto w/C-Flex beeps twice.

Note: The word "setup" will appear on all of the screens indicating that you are in the Therapy Setup Menu.
(If you press the Pressure start/stop button, you will exit the Setup Menu.)

Wish I had that a couple weeks ago
I would like to elaborate on some of those settings (their limits and what they mean?) within the menu (maybe a little later).

I could not figure out how to post with the grid markings but What I had in mind was something with column headings of the menu like this but with the headings going across the top-

Date
Hrs. 219.7
Setup
Night
>4hrs 26
CFLE
cm
H2O 20
C-flex 3
Ramp :45
Ramp
Start
cm H2O 10
Alert 1=on
LED 1=on

Where you could write in the current settings and any changes.

I've got it now just couldn't figure out how to post it.

Did that make any sense?
