Dry mouth: What to do?

Post by Hybrid Convert » Fri Aug 18, 2006 8:51 pm

Wow, the hybrid is wonderful after two weeks of use. I converted from Swift nasal pillows and mouth taping. In 14 months with Swift I never felt good and rarely dreamed. Two weeks with the hybrid and I am feeling better each day and having pleasant vivid dreams some nights.

One problem, after several nights with hybrid I began to mouthbreath. I don't mind this because it seems like I really need the extra oxygen. However the dry mouth is very annoying to the point of waking me up early some mornings.

Any solutions for this? I already have the humidifier set at near maximum level. Any higher and the 400ml tank would run out before the alarm clock sounds.

I have had this happen to me with the hybrid only once or twice though.
Usually the chin flap keeps my mouth shut for me once in a while my chin will sneak out Then I mouth breath and get a dry mouth.

I have heard others suggest products from Oral-B,specifically a toothpaste and a gel that is supposed to keep your mouth moist.

Might be worth looking into.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body totally worn out and screaming,WOO HOO what a ride!

I suggest you drink a glass of water before you go to bed. In case you do wake up to go to the bathroom, drink another glass of water. This will help the dry mouth problem.

I found a gel which I really like. It is effective for several hours.

I am still interested to hear about other possible solutions as the gel will not last the entire night.

The chin piece controls my mouth openings so I do not really have a mouth dryness problem. Before controlling my mouth openings I liked the biotene products; toothpaste, mouthwash just before putting on the mask for the night, and oral drops during the night. That said I don't think anything will last the night-I think you have to reduce the mouth breathing/opening. Do you have a problem with your nasal passages. If not, there should be enough air getting blown into your airways via the pillows-although if you are used to mouth breathing it won't feel like it. Here is a post from Rested Gal keeping mouth from opening

dry mouth

I am not sure nor can I venture a theory about dry mouth, but I know I have it occasionally and have no real good explanation.
What I do know is that since I have been using an apap for about 10 months, I have much less dry mouth- maybe 80 pct less than cpap.

Sometimes I can wake up with a very dry mouth and try to determine how it happens even while concentrating on the air flow.
Maybe it has to do with the ambient humidity or the airflow.
But I am only half awake and cannot figure it out.

Lots of things I cannot figure out, especially the Democrats approach to the terroriist problem Maybe I should just close my mouth and pretend it does not exist like they do.
But what do I know?
