I am a new CPAP user, this is my third night. Not doing too badly despite the fact that my information has come from this board. The rep at APRIA told me NOTHING . I had to tell her I wanted a nasal pillow mask, she didn't even offer any options. I have a FP Cpap machine with a built in in humidifier, just the basics, no monitoring. My pressure is 9 and I am using the Swift mask. No soreness in my nares but the tip of my nose down to where my nose meets the area above my lip gets sore from the pressure of the mask . Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Do I have the mask too tight? It doesn't seem tight. Last night I put a tissue between the mask and my upper lip as a cushion because it was bothering me the first night. First night I woke every 2 hours but last night did pretty well and slept with it all night. I think it was leaking a little in the morning but not really sure.
Other people have complained that the mask is noisy but mine really isn't. My mouth and throat do get dry though and sometimes I wake up sort of gasping through my mouth. I am not a mouth breather and this only happens when I use a mask. It happened during the sleep study too.
sleeping in my big comfy bed used to be one of my favorite things and now it seems like a chore, BUT my edema is going down I lost 3 lbs in 2 days and I have had much more energy the past 2 days so I guess something is working.
I'd appreciate any help for improving the comfort at the tip of my nose and septum.

It took me several weeks to get rid of that sore nose tip!
1. YES, do try to loosen the straps! I learned that Swift actually works well with very loose straps! I would loosen mine up to "just a hair above the leak point! Once I found that perfect spot, I never messed with adjustments agains! Just slipped it on/off each night!
2. Switch off masks to give your nose a break! I would use an Activa when I felt like I just couldn't take any more nose tip irritation! In the beginning, it was Swift for 2-3 days then Activa for 1-2. After about 10 days, I could go longer with the Swift, 4-6 days before needing a break with the Activa. Finally, after about the 4th week, I was able to use the Swift only!
3. Some have found relief with different gels/ creams. I tried the Ayr gel but I did not like that "mushy" slippery feel.
I can only equate the process of Swift adjustment with learning to tolerate a bicycle seat! Just takes repeated practice to condition the specific areas!
(And there was no way that I could repeat the practice without some relief along the way! )
