open sore on my nose

Post by jum001 » Fri Aug 04, 2006 9:43 am

I kept thinking the skin would toughen up like the supplier said it would. I even spend about one night a week not wearing the equipment to allow the skin to rest. Now I have a scab on top of my nose where the resmed full face mask presses down. Is there anything I could use to relieve the pressure without affecting the seal?

What mask are you using? You could/should try loosening the straps a bit. It sounds like you may have them too tight. I had the same problem when I starte out and it was because I had the straps too tight. If you want, you could try putting a bandaid over the sore and that will allow it to heal and should keep it from getting any worse or prevent it from forming again once it is healed.

I have a Resmed Comfortfull mask and no longer get the sore nose thing since I started moving the mask up a bit so that it doesn't rest on the bridge of my nose. That means that the bottom of the mask is almost on my lower lip. I had to fiddle with the adjustments -- especially the one at the top of the mask -- to get a good fit and minimize leaks, but it now works pretty well for me. I used it last night and not only did I not have a sore nose this morning but, even with quite a lot of side sleeping, I had very few leaks during the night. I still prefer my Comfortcurve, but last night wasn't bad at all.

Neosporin and a small bandaid. Worked for me.

you have the upper straps way too tight, my comfortfull 2 did the same thing but i just used a bandaid to let my nose heal, i also started leaving the mask a little looser and got a better seal and did not have the sore problem anymore. and be sure to use the tilt adjustment on the forehead piece, it will allow the top part of the cushion to tilt away from the bridge of your nose also helping to avoid anymore sores.

I started cutting a strip of the thin (almost see through) paper medical tape bought at drugstore and putting it over bridge of my nose. It works great. No sores. Now, I only use the tape about every 3rd night or so.

Most other tapes had too much sticky, were hard to get off or too large. Worked well for me.

You can try a product called cann-ease (for a quick fix you could use KYJelly- I know sounds crazy -- but its the same product sold for a different reason, but actually cheaper to go that way) It puts a layer of jelly moisture over that spot .. talk a little dab and rub it on that (healed) area (little dab goes along way) (also good for nasal pillow users) ... your sore could be the mask product causing the irritation or could be too tight and rubbing back and forth causes the scab, as most of people have said they have been told that the skin will toughen up some thats true, after awhile .... try the jelly it does not effect the seal ... i work at sleep center of tulsa ... hope this helps!
