Darnit, I got logged out. Above post is mine. =)

By the way, another question.... does the Hybrid discourage mouthbreathing by holding your mouth mostly closed? The HC431 does this, and it annoys me because I NEED to breathe through my mouth. I have to open my jaw and thus slide the bottom seal further up toward the tip of my chin, in order to keep my lips open when my jaw relaxes. Annoying. If the Hybrid also attempts to keep my mouth closed, that would be equally annoying. What's the point of having a mouth component to a nasl mask if it's forcing your mouth shut all the time? Can cutting off that "chin flap" thing prevent this, and let me keep my mouth open?

I never saw what was so bad about "mouth breathing" anyway. I've done it all my life... Before xPAP I used to sleep with gaping maw all the time. Never had any ill effects. Want to keep sleeping that way... possibly less gaping, but still open for air intake. =)

Thanks!

My numbers are up

Post by Ritap1965 » Fri Aug 04, 2006 11:29 am

My AHI has gone up with the hybrid, and I think I know why. With my ComfortCurve I usually sleep on my side and burrow my head into the pillow, and pretty much stay that way throughout the night. With the hybrid I find that I end up sleeping on my back, and that is probably why my AHI has gone up. If I sleep on my back my numbers are always worse. Other than my AHI having gone up, I like the hybrid.

The Hybrid lets you open the mouth (unless you are using too small an oral cushion). If for some reason you find it difficult, you can cut the chin flap off. It does not compromise the seal.

Will the Hybrid work with a mustache and small beard?

Post by grybeard3 » Mon Aug 07, 2006 4:14 pm

I have tried almost all available masks on the market and had settled on the Breeze nasal pillows sleep gear until I noticed the pad was wearing the hair off the top of my head....So I ordered the "Swift" and the Comfort Lite2. The swift came first (I am a side sleeper) and what a disappointment the "Swift" was, so got the Comfort lite 2 going and like it almost as well as the Breeze.
Now here comes the Hybrid and it sounds like the answer to my problems with leaks and opening mouth and having escaping air wake me..BUT, have read in several posts that whiskers are almost a guarantee for leaks.
Has any one with facial hair tried the Hybrid and found it to be worthy of a try? I don't want to shave it all off if I don't have to, but comes the day, I will...

I am pleased others have better luck with the hybrid. My jaw still drops with it and the leaks at the corners of my mouth are very annoying. I wish I could find a remedy but perhaps my facial features preclude my being successful. I am using the large mouth interface since the other sizes are just too small.

Like everything else in life...what is good for one may be bad for another.

leaks

Post by wolftracker » Mon Aug 07, 2006 5:23 pm

are you sure there are leaks?
i think mine is leaking, but I am unable
to locate a leak anywhere. It feels like air on
my cheeks, but I believe it is just the high
pressure existing the vent ports.

i just can not find a leak anywhere ...
but it feels like it on my cheeks

How loud are the vent ports and feed tube?

Grybeard3, Mikemoran did a review on the hybrid mask and he has facial hair. Search for 'hybrid mask, week 1'. This is the only mask I ever used. The RT said I needed the small cushion and medium pillows. I played with it for an afternoon and decided on the medium cushion and small pillows. I have no problems with this mask and sleep better than ever! A Papillow and PAD-A-CHEEKS complete my setup and make this whole thing almost comfortable!

I have been tracking AHI differences between the Hybrid and other FF masks, nasal pillows with chin strap/mouth tape etc. I did my own study on 5 patients in which I only asked the patient to change the mask (the Auto CPAP machine was the same). I also have been reading posts from users on this forum with a lot of interest.
Maskjkie, Could you PM so I can ask you a question about the numbers
you are seeing.

Thanks
Wolf

Wolf,
The AHI numbers I'm seeing are anywhere from 1.5-3.6 lower with the Hybrid compared to FF masks like the UMFF and HC431.

I thought I solved the mouth corner leak problem by using small pieces of paper tape on each side leaving the lips unsealed in center. It started off well as most things do with this mask. As the night wore on, my pressure went to the highest level of 12 cm. indicative of major leaks, (Normal range is 6-8.5 max.) (range 6-12), weird leaking sounds and another pathetic night.

I have never had a mask which starts off fine but as you sleep, the Hybrid gremlins come in and make it impossible. Straps become undone at the slightest movement and me as a back sleeper I cannot figure it out. Conclusion: this mask needs a lot more work before I can use it.

interesting

Post by wolftracker » Fri Aug 11, 2006 5:14 am

i twist and turn all night and dont seem to have that problem.
I also have the valve going up instead of down and down have
the noise problems ours have.

my problem seems to be putting the dumb thing on

i try to leave the top straps alone and take off the bottom
straps to put on/remove and every darn time one of the top
straps pop off at the vercro

also i dont see how you would use the padacheck covers on this
as i have to adjust the vercro ever nite of the week i have been useing
the mask... i have to losen the velcro ... put mask on ... the tighten
the velcro ... just no darn way to put it on and off with out adjusting
and if the padachecks was covering the velcro ... how do you do it

i want to get a set of pad a checks ... but just can not figure out
what i am doing wrong with putting the mask on and off

Release the 2 lower clips...then lift off from head by reaching back and lifting on lower strap, remove from nose...

This mask needs to go back to the drawing table IMO.

I adjusted the mask the first day I got it. Since then I haven't had to touch it. I unhook only one bottom strap to slide it off and on. The only velcro giving me trouble is the one that goes over the top of the head, but that's my fault. I have a habit of keeping one arm over my head and that seems to work the velcro open after a few hours. I basically sleep from midnight to 7am with no problems. As a matter of fact my husband said this am that after 2 weeks of cpap I no longer toss and turn all night! I didn't know I could feel this good!
