My daughter uses ear plugs whenever we are out in my motorhome or share a motel room, but forgets to mention that she snores like a trooper And NO she does not have osa, she just is a snorer. Doesn't matter that my snoring prior to cpap is now gone, now she says my machine is noisy... go figure

Wearing ear plugs are no problem if you can't stand the sound of your hubbies cpap.. whatever works for you to have a nice peaceful sleep. Try out all the suggestions that have been given to you, if they don't work, ear plugs are the answer.
Good luck
Nan
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

When I first started CPAP I used to wear ear plugs to bed. I also went through a faze were I would wear earbuds to sleep instead. Those kind that go inside your ear canal just like ear plugs. I could then listen to some music turned almost all the way down...

The benefits and draw backs are going to depend on the person and their peculiarities as far as what bothers them or not. Most things can be both a good thing and a bad thing when it comes to stopping up your ears. White noise generators or listening to your clock radio on sleep mode can work also. I'd play around a bit and find what works for you. I've listed some of the good and bad that I could think of off the top of my head below. Hope it's not too long winded.

Benefits of ear plugs.
Blocks out most outside noise.
Allows you to hear your self - Inside noises - like your breathing and heart beat. This can be like a different kind of white noise and some my find it soothing or meditative to listen to. (I know I liked it)
Cons
Some people will find them uncomfortable - can't stand having something in their ear.
Blocks out most outside noise - Make sure you can still hear what you need to hear, Fire alarms, alarm clock, anything you need your ears to react to if there is something wrong will be lessened by plugs.
Allows you to hear your self - Inside noises - Some people may find sounds like swallowing or breathing or heart beat to be annoying or gross - also as one person mentioned if you have any sort of hearing issue like tinnitus blocking all outside noises may cause you to focus even more so on that issue.
Ear health - Over use of ear plugs with out proper care can sometimes cause problems. Your at higher risk of infection or build up of wax and other things that normally are flushed from the ear as you sleep. Make sure your mindful of this and take extra care of your ears.

Benefits of headphones
Same as above - but if you have issues with hearing your self you can play what ever sound you like softly or comfortably to help you sleep.
If you like to listen to white noise or music only you can hear it. This is good if your partner isn't too keen on having to listen to what your hearing - like with a fan or noise generator.
Cons
Same as above - Blocking of outside noise is even greater if combined with music or some other sound.
Headphones can be an even bigger issue when it comes to comfort - Imagine the endless search for the right cpap mask only now it's for your ears. (I've got 3 styles of headphones I find I can sleep in with out any discomfort.)
Cables could cause you to get tangled up - not that I think normal headphone cables are strong enough to strangle anyone but be careful with the fabric braided cables as they could pose a danger if you toss and turn a lot. Some of the high end cable braid materials sometimes use synthetic blends that contain Kevlar or other very strong fibers. These could pose a strangulation risk.
Listening to prolonged music or loud sound could damage your hearing - (though I don't think this applies - how would you fall a sleep listening to something so loud it's blaring at you.)

Benefits of using a fan or other audio device to drown out cpap noise.
Doesn't effect your ability to hear what you need to.
Can be heard by everyone in the bed room.
Helps blend away unwanted sounds by drowning them out.
No cords to get tangled in.
nothing in your ear no ear health concerns.
cons
Can be heard by everyone - this may be a bad thing if your bed partner can't stand your white noise machine.
doesn't really block sounds - so if you are hyper sensitive or focus on everything - you'll still hear the annoying noises just mixed in with the white noise/music. This could drive you nuts instead of helping.

I hope this helps someone - sorry if some of this is stating the obvious.
Take care all!
