Sleep studies question
Sleep studies question
My wife suffers from insomnia and when she does get to sleep she moves her legs about every 10 seconds waking herself up. Will a sleep study cover these symptoms? Thanks

Sleep Studies aren't set in stone, you will have to ask whoever you use what they do or cover.Hornnumb2 wrote:My wife suffers from insomnia and when she does get to sleep she moves her legs about every 10 seconds waking herself up. Will a sleep study cover these symptoms? Thanks
It sounds like she also has Restless Leg Syndrome, Google that, or search to find out more. Jim

Re: Sleep studies question
A standard in lab sleep test will gather data on periodic limb movements and a sleep test is the usual way to diagnose periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD). I'm not sure if a sleep test is needed to diagnose restless leg syndrome (RLS). It's worth noting that RLS and PLMD are different things, but both can be very disturbing to your sleep.Hornnumb2 wrote:My wife suffers from insomnia and when she does get to sleep she moves her legs about every 10 seconds waking herself up. Re: Sleep studies question
Your mention of the timing of her movements sounds like periodic limb movements, which are rhythmic and stereotypical in nature. Does your wife also have sleep apnea? I ask because it can be a bit more tricky to judge how bad the limb movements are if untreated obstructive sleep apnea is a part of the picture. A doctor decides if wiring the legs is a part of a sleep study. She would need to be sure her doctor orders the legs as a part of her study.
