Cpap hose ... Necessary to wash if not using humidifier?

Post by SleepyDeb » Sun May 07, 2017 11:54 am

Just wondering if it is necessary to wash the CPAP hose if you are not using the humidifier. I don't ever use the humidifier... The chamber is connected to the machine, but the humidifier is turned off. I have been every couple of weeks or so just running hot water through the hose and letting it drip dry, but is that really necessary?

Not necessary unless it bothers you to let it be.
It's more psychological than scientific, as long as your immunity is normal.

It's not necessary to wash the hose even if you are using the humidifier.

Not necessary unless you have dropped it into the commode before you flushed. I supposed you hung it up in the bathroom to dry after washing it, The Bathroom is the MOST germ infested room in your house. Jim

I quit washing the long hose about a year ago. I took the advice of the people on here who said it was a waste of time. Looks like they were right.

Cleaning the hose is like cleaning the rest of your equipment. Some people here clean some things daily, weekly, monthly, or never. Clean to the level are comfortable with.

it's totally unnecessary, plus, your hose will last longer.

Theoretically it could be a breeding ground for Legionella. There has been a reported case: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27096478 However, this seems rare (or not tested frequently),

since it's not mentioned in the abstract, does it specifically say that it was found to be colonizing the hose, or is that just speculation on your part?

I believe it was a water sample from the patient's humidifier. It's been a while since I had access to the article and had it translated.

It would be even more rare to have it in tubing as tubing usually will dry in between sessions. However, there is always a theoretical risk (however small). I personally don't clean my hose. My wife (an RPSGT) cleans it every so often as it drives her crazy that I don't clean it. I clean the mask and humidifier.

"theoretical" is all well and good, but "practically" is much more useful.

Theoretically, a million dollar diamond could appear on your nightstand, quantum physics defines it's possibility, (however small). in practical application, the times it's happened so far have been so few as to be zero.

Exactly why I don't clean my hose.
