can this AHI still cause tiredness
can this AHI still cause tiredness
Hi
I have been using CPAP for about 18 months. I finally found a mask that is really comfortable, and doesn't destroy my skin. However, my central apneas have been rising, and I have been feeling tired, especially on days that my AHI (via sleepyhead) is over 2 or 3. If 1 or under I tend to feel much better. I know that under 5 is considered treated. But can I be sensitive enough that and AHI of .5 allow me to feel good (ie, rested, and not feeling like going back to sleep an hour after getting up.) but an AHI of 3 doesn't? ANy advice appreciated.

Re: can this AHI still cause tiredness
Many people feel untreated with an AHI of over 3 so you're not much different. And the 'centrals' you noted - if they mainly occurred around falling asleep and just prior to waking - may not be true centrals but 'sleep-wake' junk, nothing to worry about unless they start happening all night, or in large clusters, etc.
Re: can this AHI still cause tiredness
I feel better when my AHI is under 1. They say up to five is OK, but that is very arbitrary.

Thanks. Found lots of good reading that substantiates the discussions I've read on here on the topic. Have always trusted that those speaking about the subject were knowledgeable, and it looks like this time I was right. I did find it helpful to add the word apnea to the search to weed out all the basketball talk, of which I'm even less familiar than centrals.palerider wrote:Google transitional centralsxxyzx wrote:do you have a pointer to sleepwake junk info ?

Re: can this AHI still cause tiredness
I'm glad someone posted this. I've only been on therapy for about 45 days, but now that I've found a good mask and gotten used to the machine, my events have increased as well. I definitely feel the difference. I'm staying above 3.5 events an hour and sometimes it's up to 6 or 7. For the first couple of weeks I averaged less than 2 events an hour and sometimes as low as 0.5. It's really frustrating because I feel dead in the morning at 3 or above. I would wager I'm in better shape now on therapy, have lost about 10lbs and I'm an active 36yo military member besides that. I need to start using sleepy head to see what kind of events these are, but I'm guessing it's probably central apnea. I have a bad habit of holding my breath sometimes with the machine on when I'm not asleep. I wonder if I do that when I'm asleep as well.

Quite a bit of this therapy has to do with the amount of sleep you're getting, also.
If you're not getting enough sleep, you're (probably) still going to be tired.
It's not always the AHIs.
