I've always had "email notification" turned off in my preferences.
As for old threads being resurrected by spam, that doesn't bother me. It's been kind'a interesting to see some of the old threads again.
I think the way Johnny is allowing registered users to delete spam is working well.

Tom,
For once, I'm going to disagree with you. I don't know if we're "winning" or "losing", but I'm seeing a lot fewer spam posts. Yes, I've "killed" a few here and there, but as long as it's spread around, we won't ALL see nearly as many.....thanks to Johnny.
I DO have my e-mail notification turned on.
Also, like RG, I do enjoy seeing some of the older posts get pulled out of the archives......and some of the avatars and names of the people who frequented the forum a year or more ago.
The spam posts also bring some of them back.......like -SWS and Liam (and a few more I've seen lately, too).

Like RG, I have my email turned off. I like going into the forum in the morning while I'm drinking my coffee and just browsing around and reading all the posts. Ever wonder why my spelling is atrocious in the mornings? That's cause I'm still drinking my coffee and trying to wake up.
I think we got these spammers licked - thanks to Johnny. And all you guys are just too fast for me - I seldom get to delete a spam.
Four more days and we leave on our trip. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

I wonder. I have seen more spam since the new functionality was put in place. I zap 'em right away, but they are there. I don't see as much of spammers starting threads as I used to, but I do see them posting in ongoing threads quite a bit.We no longer have a SPAM problem, the tools that are in place work fine.
We found a great birdfeeder that works. But of course like all good cpapers, we had to do a little labratting.tomjax wrote:This ongoing battle reminds me of my attempts to stop squirrels and racoons from getting my bird feed.
These feeders are spendy, but very sturdy. We've had ours for 5 years and love it.
http://www.birdwatchers.com/ (get model AR360)
Throw a 30' dog-run cable over a tree branch, with enough slack so you can lower the feeder to fill it. Make sure it isn't close to the tree trunk or the raccoons will just reach over and grab it.
You need to run the upper part of the cable through 5 feet of PVC (PCV, PCP, or whatever it's called) piping. Otherwise, the raccoons will sit on the branch and pull the cable up the branch to them.
You end up with a large feeder hanging 5 feet below a large limb in a tree. I guarantee it's squirrel proof and racoon proof. Although its fun to watch the squirrels try to get to the feeder - they slide right off the top. And the raccoons have to be content to sit on the ground at night and each leftovers that the birds drop.

Some websites require registration in order to curb the spamming.
But with some creative programming, there is a way to further eliminate spamming here. It involves programming it to make it impossible for guests to post links. It's a small price to pay. That's what spammers want to do, post links. But you can program this site so that spammers have to register in order to post any link. Some may do it, but most will not. It's a great alternative, because it still allows guests to participate. And it eliminates quite alot of spamming.
And oops, I forgot to log in.

spam
Maybe it is the way a person views the forum.
I usually click on view posts since last vsit and see many postings that have had spam removed with only the old thread there. Sometimes it has not been removed and I zap them.
Today I have deleted probably 10-12 spam,.
When I go to the regular click to read all posts, they seem to be gone.
Maybe those who do not see it are looking this way.
Mabe I am just being anal or obsessed.

Recent posts
I don't always get the list of new postings.
Sometimes I do, and then when I try to read a thread and return, the little red N's are all missing.
And, now we know who ELSE is having all the fun zapping the spammers!

i zap them as soon as i sees them, but it gets redundant after awhile, they need to do something to keep them from posting spam, block guests from posting links like i saw mentioned or something else, i dunno.

spam
I have zapped 10-12 today that are at the bottom of old posts.
It seems that when I click on view posts since last visit they are there and I wonder how many are zapped every day.
Maybe if I click on the main forum and see all the posts, then they are not there.
Maybe those who do not see a problem are doing this.

Sunday Morning update"
Got up at 6:04 for pit stop and could not get back to sleep.
Checked mail, news, stc.
Came here and started killing spammers.
Looks like Hambone and maybe someone else is in a killing mood.
Guess I zapped about 12-15 in about an hour.
So that means most is gone for others.
These guys are persistent.
not sure why their server or whatever the address shows cannot be banned.
But then what would Hambone, me, and others do with our obsession????
Happy Sunday, all

I'm impressed, tomjax! I didn't kill nearly that many. I think I got maybe three this morning, and thought I'd done good.tomjax wrote:Guess I zapped about 12-15 in about an hour.

VERY INTRESTING...
It seems that GUESTS are no longer the only SPAMMERS on the board. I just deleted a message from a member who has two posts so far... both of which are SPAM. The member is tonny07.
I can't believe a SPAMMER actually took the time to register here.
