A.W.A.K.E. Support Group in Illinois!
A.W.A.K.E. Support Group in Illinois!
Hey there everyone! I was on a mission to locate the A.W.A.K.E. Support Group in Illinois. I have finally found a group that meets at the Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village.
I wanted to share this with anyone and everyone that would be interested in joining a Support Group. This group meets every 4th Thursday of each month except in November & December. Their next meeting will be on Thursday, February 27, 2005 from 7:00pm - 8:30pm. Their website is: http://www.sublung.com and their newsletter can be found on http://www.sublung.com/wakenew.html
I know I am planning on attending this Support Group this month, hopefully nothing will pop up to prevent me from attending. I really look forward to meeting people with my problem and be able to communicate with people that understand what I am going through. I am not saying you guys don't understand me.... I do really like you all.... even though I haven't met you yet..... Just, it would be nice to be able to talk to someone and get a response at that same time a question is asked. You know what I mean? I do plan on still coming to this site even if I do join this group.... So, don't you guys misbehave!! LOL!!
Like I said, I just wanted to be able to get the word out there for anyone else that may be interested in joining a Support Group as well. Talk to you all soon!

Hi G00fy,
Thanks for tracking that down. Did you talk to them on the phone. I'm curious about what the presentation topic will be at the next meeting. Looks as though they could use an infusion of active members. The newsletter linked on the site was from 1997. It's about and hour and a half drive for me and I would be willing to attend if it is or has the potential of being a viable organization. I also know others on the forum within driving distance that might be encouraged to attend. If you have any additional info about this chapter or the upcoming meeting please post some more about it.

Wading,
You know, I didn't even notice that the newsletter was 1997 - dah Boy... am I a goof or what Oh, yeah, that's right - I am!
However, I did leave a message on their voicemail. I had received info from the Alexian Bros. Medical Center/hospital at my home and on that it mentions that their meetings are held at the Elk Grove Village Public Library - address: 1001 Wellington Avenue, Elk Grove Village, IL. Library Phone # 847-439-0447 - I also have a message in to the Library Coordinator about it as well.
As soon as I get more detailed information, I will post it so you and everyone else that is interested can get the info too. I hope to meet you! I do know the meeting in the publication from the hospital is set up for February 24, 2005 at 7pm - 8:30pm! As soon as I get the location varified, I will inform you!
Thanks for catching the year! I just got so excited to find a location not too far from me. Hey Wade, let me know if you need a place to stay. I work for a hotel and will be glad to get you a great rate. The hotel located less than 5 miles from the hospital.
Take Care!

A.W.A.K.E. groups in Illinois
Hi, everyone!
Yes, there is an A.W.A.K.E. support group that meets at the Elk Grove Village Library. I know, because I'm the coordinator of the group!
When the hospital quit paying our postage a number of years ago, we quit doing newsletters and only send our email or postcard announcements for the meetings. The firm of sleep physicians who started the group still have the old document on their site. I'll have to talk to them about that.
We do meet the 4th Thursday of the month at 7:00 pm. Meetings usually go till 9 or so, depending on questions.
In 2005, our schedule at the library is to meet in January, March, April, May, June, July, August, September and October. Our November meeting would be Thanksgiving night, so we all just eat turkey and sleep well that night. In December the meeting would be very close to Christmas Day. We have had a purely social evening early in December in some years.
February 24 is the normal date for our next meeting, but the Elk Grove Village Library has pre-empted the room for two weeks, so we do not currently have a scheduled meeting in February.
However, earlier tonight goofy217 reached me by phone and we are discussing the possibility of meeting that night at another location which she may be able to arrange.
We'll post more information here early next week.
Meanwhile, if anyone wants information about A.W.A.K.E. groups, especially around Chicago, feel free to contact me here. There are about a dozen groups in the Chicago metro area.
As for a national listing of support groups, the American Sleep Apnea Association is the group that fosters the A.W.A.K.E. Network of support groups. We are working on a new page for our website at http://www.sleepapnea.org that will allow you to search for a group based on ZIP code. Until then, visit the website or email awake@sleepapnea.org and ask about a group in your area. Just be sure to say what city and state you're in! It's funny how many requests we get that say: "Do you have a group in my area?" and we have no clue as to where the person is located.

That includes the usual three-and-a-half pots of coffee per sleepy hosehead in the morning?G00fy217 wrote: I have put a Special Rate in just for this meeting into the hotel computer system of $59.00 + tax for the night, which includes a Full Hot Breakfast Buffet the following morning and if you get to the hotel between 5pm-7pm, the rate also includes the Hotel Manager's Reception with Complimentary Appetizers and Beer & Wine along with non-alcoholic beverages.
Seriously, that's a great rate, a great complimentary spread, and a great gesture on your part!
Yes, this rate is a Terrific Rate actually. The hotel is an ALL-SUITE Hotel. So every room is a Suite - You can say it's a SUITE DEAL!
But anyways, I just wanted to be able to help out my fellow hoseheads! I know it's hard to do long drives sometimes and if there could be a Light at the end of the Tunnel, why not offer it to my people who can help me too!
I really hope we can get a good attendance to this meeting.... So, please let me know if you can come out.
Thanks!

So nice of you--
Goofy,
That is so nice of you to arrange a deal like that. I am just sorry that I can't participate. It falls on a day for me that I have to work plus the fact of the long commute--309.4 miles with approximate travel time: 6 hours 52 mins. Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks for your kindness and I hope there are several out there that can take advantage of the offer. Let us know how it turns out--

Felineperson,
You are so very welcome! If you need to get information about a group closer to you, please let me know.
Actually.... Dave has a list of groups all over Illinois. If you PM him and let him know what area you are in, he can probably tell you where to find a group closer to you.
I hope there's a good attendance for this group. It just would be so nice to be able to share experiences, etc.... in person with others. This is nice, but the personal touch is just a tad bit nicer... you know what I mean?

Does anyone want to attend this meeting? I am planning on setting up the room for 40 people, and am hoping to get that many to attend. So far, it looks like it's me and Muckmeister along with Dave and some people from the normal Elk Grove Village group.
It would be sooooo nice to have more people in attendance..... Anyone?

Dave,
That's great news! I know there are at least a dozen registered forum members who live in an around the Chicago area. This would be great opportunity to meet a few people on the forum and see what attending a local support group is all about.
I driving down from WI to see what it's all about. If at all possible this would be a great time to give it a try.
Hpoe to see you all there.
