How long did it take to get used to the mask

Post by bt_rox88 » Tue Jan 31, 2017 10:05 pm

I have tried the CPAP machine a few times and have not been able to get used to it. I have a hard time getting used to the mask. I think I have the least obtrusive mask (Respironics Nuance Pro), and I still can't get used to it. I think I am kind of a mouth breathing sleeper even though I breath through my nose all day.

So how long does it usually take to get used to the mask? Any tips?

Thanks,
BT

What problems are you having with your mask? Leaks or mouth breathing waking you up, feeling like not enough air?
What machine do you have? Model or Ref number on the blower. Be sure and take water out if turning over.

Took me about 5 to 6 weeks before I could sleep for longer than 4-5 hours with my full face Simplus mask.

The pressure was not really the issue, it was more the feeling of the mask itself, and the need to sleep in a specific way to prevent the mask from moving too much.

If you are talking just about getting use to sleeping with something strange on your face. It's different for everybody. Some took weeks or more before making it through the night. I had no problem sleeping with the mask but had to work through air leaking into my eyes and sores on my skin. That took about 2 weeks and a liner to get past.

I went thru 6 or 7 masks before I found one that was comfortable and doesn't leak. Once I found my mask, it seems that I was probably already used to wearing it. It is normal to go thru several masks.

It takes some of us longer than others. I was verry lucky
that after the first 5 to 10 minuets my full face mask never
bothered me at all. In the over 10 years I have been using
cpap I never used it less than 6 hrs a night and have never
taken it off during sleep. But twice I had a mask break during
the night so I always keep at least one spair.

First, don't assume that any mask is "the best" or the "best for you." It takes trial and error.

If the problem is noise or leaking, try loosening or tightening the straps (more likely loosening).

If the problem is contact soreness, soak the face piece in 50% vinegar solution for two hours before first use (no need to repeat until you change the face piece).

We are all different and thankfully there are many options for us. As others have said, you might not have the right mask for you. Personally, I failed miserably about 10 years ago with nasal pillows. I had the Mirage Swift pillows/headgear and some Remstar Machine. I was a mouth breather, and on the two nights I actually wore it, my mouth opened and all the air came out my mouth. Lack of motivation, knowledge and support are the reasons I didn't follow through.
Fast forward to now. I had enough of feeling like crap and went for a new sleep study to confirm the diagnosis again and titrate. I thought I would need a FFM since I am a mouth breather. The Tech actually recommended a nasal mask (F&P Eson) and if needed a chin strap. After 20 minutes I ripped the chin strap off and fell asleep. It turns out with enough airflow through my nose, my mouth doesn't open.
I got my machine the end of December. I find its easier if I am able to put the mask on just before I fall asleep. This is a problem sometime because there is a small window and I sometimes fall asleep, though never more than an hour. Once it's on and I fall asleep I'm good. Waking up with it on is fine. I can turn over and go right back to sleep.
Last week I had a couple days again that were a little difficult but after that smooth sailing.
