Day Surgery & CPAP
Hi All,
I'm going in for a day surgery procedure tomorrow, it's just twilight sedation. The hospital admission forms say to bring your CPAP machine with you if you have one, but they're generic forms for all kinds of surgery. So, does anyone know if that's just if you're staying in overnight or if it's actually to be used during anaesthetic?
Thanks everyone!

Honestly, you should be asking them.LizaLouise wrote:Hi All,

Take it.
On generic forms, you only skip the items crossed out by your doctor.
Consider everything else necessary.
This late in the day, no one will be answering the phone.

Re: Day Surgery & CPAP
It's not used when you are under sedation.
They tell you to bring it just in case you end up sleeping a lot in the little room after the procedure or if you end up staying overnight for some unknown reason.
I have had surgery to fix a broken wrist...a colonoscopy...an endoscopy...all with some sort of twilight sedation and was told to bring my machine but it was never needed.
They will leave it in the room where your clothes and other belongings are kept...and you go back to that room after the procedure.
Just make sure anyone who is with you knows how to turn it on and help you use it if it looks like you are going to be sleeping very much.
I never came close to needing it. The stuff that give you to bring you out of the sedation works real good and real fast.

That is something to ask the anaesthesiologist.
Mine was very easy to talk to about my concerns etc when I had a recent procedure that was with an overnight stay. I talked with the him before the procedure and he said I would be very lightly under using propofol, just enough to prevent me from moving around.
He already knew about my OSA issues even before talking to him.
Not sure how to explain it but he used a partial tube in my mouth that went to the back of my throat after they had me under that helped my breathing. It was not an intubation though, as I recall when he removed it when I awoke.
The procedure was about an hour but I was woken up on purpose about 15-20 mins before it was over after the part they really didn't want me to move.
I used my CPAP after I got out back to my room and that night and was glad I had it, but there were no issue during the procedure.
There was an extreme amount of care to ensure there was no chance of infection in the lab, not sure they would have allowed my cpap in there anyway.

Thanks everyone! Very much appreciated.
Unfortunately I wasn't able to ask them as they aren't available today due to it being a public holiday and my admission time tomorrow is before business hours. Otherwise I would have. Thanks again, you guys are amazing.

These types of sedation are reversed quickly. I wouldn't worry about the time you are being monitored. Just let the anesthesiologist know you have apnea and brought your machine if needed.Pugsy wrote:It's not used when you are under sedation.

This type of question is better asked when the appt is made or shortly thereafter.LizaLouise wrote:Thanks everyone! Very much appreciated.

W/o knowing what type of surgery you are having I think one can only guess which way to go. Esp. since many hospitals and doctors will answer differently here is the US nevermind in another country.
By now your surgery is over - I do hope all went well and you will be back to 100% soon.

Thanks - you're absolutely right and that is my usual approach! It's been such a chaotic time with getting multiple health issues addressed at once that it really slipped my mind until the night before. It was very un-like me!Guest wrote:This type of question is better asked when the appt is made or shortly thereafter.LizaLouise wrote:Thanks everyone! Very much appreciated.

My procedure went well thank you - just dealing with some insomnia and pain now. The anaesthesiologist who made me so nervous on the phone last night to prompt this question was actually the loveliest health care worker I've come across in a long time. In fact, the whole team I dealt with today were amazing. I'm feeling truly, truly fortunate tonight!

Re: Day Surgery & CPAP
Hi All,
In case anyone is wondering, we took it with us and promptly left it in the car! The anaesthesiologists nurse said to leave it there and for my husband to just go grab it if I needed to stay for some reason.
In future I would continue to bring it with me 'just in case' in the same way I would a puffer if I was asthmatic.
Thanks for your support and understanding, it really helped last night when I was anxious. Everything went well today - except for the embarrassing things I said while under - and I'm just trying to chill through some hot flashes, roid rage and pain.
