Is no sleep better?

Post by PurpleParrot » Wed Dec 21, 2016 11:28 am

Dear Friends, New Member here!

I had sleep apnea for years without knowing about it. Amazing story which I will set down in writing some day. The first thing I did was buy a used CPAP and after years of fatigue, I felt like a new creation. OK then I tried to buy the Rolse Roice of cpaps and got the newest Resmed. Anyway, I still don't use it every night because after many masks have not found the perfect one (I have a full beard) but when I use it I feel good.

My question is: does it make sense that not sleeping could be *better* than sleeping w/o the CPAP? I mean when I sleep without the cpap my brain is getting less oxygen, right? But when I am awake even though I am tired it's getting more, right? SO when I am work and I don't have a mobile CPAPA yet, may it be better not to nap because I will be depriving my brain of Oxygen?
Makes any sense?

TIA

Yes, it make sense not taking a nap without using a CPAP at the same time, but what about sleeping at nights? What about getting rid of your beard?

Here's the deal;
your body needs to sleep.
When you are sleeping- use the cpap. Even if it is just a nap. Every time. If you only have 1 machine, and you nap a work, take it to work with you.

When you have sleep apnea, you need to use cpap whenever you sleep. When you nap without it, you're not getting getting much actual sleep anyway.

Some people have a second or portable cpap machine if they need to sleep in more than one place often. It's good to have a backup machine anyway because they do fail and develop problems sometimes.

Also, if you use a nasal pillow mask, the beard should not be an issue. The most popular nasal pillow mask around here and at our sponsor's site, cpap.com. is the AirFit P10.

Sleep deprivation is the same no matter how you do it. The effect is the same.

Use your cpap machine every time you sleep.

All you have to do is google "effects of sleep deprivation" to see why that's not a smart solution to your issue. If you decide to do it anyway, please let us know where you live, so we can look out for you on the roads, because driving is DANGEROUS on no sleep. And you might want to increase your liability insurance by a few million dollars.

Sleeping without CPAP is equally as dangerous because in case nobody explained this to you, your brain is deprived of oxygen when you stop breathing, your body is bathed in stress hormones that set up an inflammatory cascade, your blood pressure rises, your organs are being harmed.

The mask is uncomfortable, but I know someone who fell asleep at the wheel. He has four broken limbs, has had 16 surgeries in the past 3 weeks, was intubated in an induced coma for two weeks. He's facing months of painful rehab. and financial ruin. I'm guessing that's a lot more uncomfortable than a mask on your face.

Use the CPAP, EVERY time you sleep.

Make figuring the mask thing out a priority. After some time consistently using your machine, maybe your need for naps will lessen. As to the naps, I NEVER lay down and sleep without my machine. I'd rather lose sleep than do that. My experiences with sleep apnea were scary enough to convince me. I have found that I can sit nearly upright in my recliner and have no apparent (to my self or observers) breathing difficulty as long as I keep my chin up and neck aligned. I know not everyone can get by with that - got a friend whose snoring and apnea events start as soon as they begin to doze even when sitting upright. Without knowing your case, it's anyone's guess. Just wanted to say that with accommodations some might be able to nap sans CPAP. Just don't take chances if you don't know.
