Clogged Ears with Resmed Airesense 10

Post by edmund360 » Wed Dec 07, 2016 6:01 pm

I have a new CPAP unit, the ResMed Airsense 10 AutoSet. I have been feeling dry mouth and now always seem to have a clogged air feeling. I set it to the manual mode and reduced the temp from 81 to 70 degrees and the Humidity from 2 to 5. I contacted the DME company and the representative there said that he has the same issue with the clogged air feeling. Does anyone have any idea on what is going on here and or what can be better settings to correct this?

Your title says clogged "EARS" which is logical because sometimes CPAP can make your feel that way, but your post says "Clogged Air" which is a different thing--feeling like you can't get air in or out?

Please clarify, big difference between them!

What are your PRESSURE settings?

If you mean clogged ears, then, yes, that's common. Learn to equalize pressure using the valsalva maneuver and it will probably help.

If the "clogged" feeling is a result of the Eustachian tubes becoming restricted the Valsalva maneuver will, indeed, work; alternatively, the Toynbee maneuver and the Otovent work as well.
With the Valsalva maneuver, one pinches the nose then exhales as if blowing out a candle but with the lips closed. This puffs out the cheeks somewhat and temporarily opens the Eustachian tubes allowing the pressure in the middle ear to become equalized relative to the outside. Swallowing or yawning following the process helps equalize the pressure inside the middle ear relative to the outer ear. The Toynbee maneuver is similar in that one pinches the nose followed by swallowing a few times until the ears "pop" signaling the equalization of inner and outer pressures. Finally, the Otovent uses a simple but very effective device to achieve results where other methods fail. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oi6DdairDIo
It requires somewhat more technique and coordination but works well.
The problem that may be causing the "clog" may be ear wax buildup rather than blocked Eustachian tubes and typically is dealt with by clearing the wax with chemical or very careful mechanical means (never q-tips) that are designed for the specific purpose. The most common chemical means uses a low concentration of hydrogen peroxide followed by a rinse with warm water under gentle pressure.

Another simple way to deal with the "clogged EAR" feeling is to put an ear plug in just ONE ear. That often works and it's simple to do.

Yes, above is clooged ears.

I'm wondering if it's the newer units with everything automatic. It may not be just the right temperature and or humidity for everyone. It also has other settings, like the EPR or the High / Low pressure setting; mine is set to 15/5; the doctor said that the chip readout shows I use about 6 cm pressure at night. I didn't have a problem with my old machine which I started to reuse until I can rule this out or not.
