Cpap giving false AHI

Post by Controlshift » Sat Nov 05, 2016 2:35 am

I was still wrecked tired with an AHI OF 1.8 so I went to my sleep doc. She said she dosent trust cpap machines result and gave examples of patients who were out by a factor 10+.
I underwent another sleep study and sure enough my AHI was 8. So she took me off auto. My average pressure was 7 which she increased and fixed at 10. Not sure if I feel the benifet now a month later but just to let ye know

This is interesting. Out by a factor of 10 is huge but what really stands out is that she took you off auto. Were you on auto when this titration was done or a fixed pressure? The latter would certainly skew the results.

If I'm reading this right, your AHI of 1.8 was when you were ON your machine (doesn't matter if it was set to C or Apap for the moment) and your sleep study result presumably was when you were NOT on a machine. Of course the numbers were different, or are you saying the test # WAS the result of using a machine in the lab (or on a home test) as well? The number you got at home was while you were being treated even if you didn't feel much better (there are many possible reasons for that having little to do with whether or not you use C- or Apap). Your doctor may be the one with no understanding of the machines, and should not be telling you what to do with either type. But IF the results were BOTH seen when you were ON a machine of any type, please say so and we'll help you sort it out. Just changing from Apap to Cpap is not necessarily the answer (though it could be, depending on other factors which we can help you to find out using software).

I have the same machine and I think I'm doing better than I did on the prior machine. Of course, I don't know for sure (because the old machine didn't create stats), but I stopped taking mid-day naps very soon after getting the machine (even though I've been using CPAP for seventeen years).

BTW, one morning I did have a high AHI, and I felt like a truck had hit me.
