Hypo filter or not?
Re: Hypo filter or not?
Just received my order from Lincare. They sent me the Hypo Resmed filters. I can definitely see the difference now. Anxious to see the results of using the hypo.

first, the light transmission ability of an air filter is rather meaningless, unless comparing against another of that same filter to see how dirty it is.lanco wrote:Nopalerider wrote:and you don't think that is a rather unfair, if not meaningless comparison?
second, white translucent fibers such as the resmed filter transmit light much better than dark foam does, so comparing how much light you can see through the two filters is meaningless.
third, open cell foam has much larger openings in it, thus will allow more dirt particles through than the much more tightly packed fibers of the thinner mat in the resmed filter... (which was my point about looking at the size of the holes in the foam).
see if you can find a spec for the foam filter, though I'll be surprised if you can, repironics is much less forthcoming with details and specs for their machines than resmed is.

Re: Hypo filter or not?
Thanx, no problem. It's really just a matter of that's what the different companies use and partly what I was used to. Also, I did use a white fine filter along with the foam one with the Respironics. I'm sure they will both do the job.palerider wrote:first, the light transmission ability of an air filter is rather meaningless, unless comparing against another of that same filter to see how dirty it is.lanco wrote:Nopalerider wrote:and you don't think that is a rather unfair, if not meaningless comparison?

Re: Hypo filter or not?
OK, I read this whole thread. Thanks Pugsy for the pics. Much thanks PaleRider for the specs on ResMed Filters.Pugsy wrote:Okay I got pictures of the 3 filters I have for my S9.
The far left is a white fine hypoallerginic disposable filter from name brand ResMed package.
The middle one is a washable filter as is the one on the far right. I don't know the brand of the one in the middle but it looks and feels denser than the one on the right.
I don't have a regular white fine disposable filter that isn't labeled as hypoallerginic but in the past I had both and to be honest couldn't ever tell you which one was what. I could never spot or feel a difference.
The washable filter on the right came out of an A/G package. A/G is an aftermarket company that supplies a lot of generic cpap equipment.
I don't know what I did with the original washable filter that came with my S9...it's somewhere but I can't find it but if my memory serves me correctly it was more like the washable filter in the middle.
My question is will this hypo filter for the S9 fit into an S8 (trimmed, probably) Also Can someone compare the hypo Resmed to the hypo Respironics? The Respironics which I use daily looks much like the Resmed hypo on one side, but on the other side there is a fine polyester (i think) clear layer with "Respironics" in black letters across it. The dirt seems to go through the thicker white section and stop before it gets into the thin clear layer with the letters. If you blow through the filter from the labelled side it blows more easily than through the clean white rougher side, which produces noticeable resistance. The Respironics also seems to be sealed together at the edges, probably by a hot knife cutter. I washed one in with the laundry one day and it came out clean without much degradation, so I think they are washable, at least a few times. I haven't tested a washed one yet. You would think Respironics would label which side goes out, but they don't. I assume it is the rough white side that should face the grey foam prefilter. I wonder how this filter stacks up against ResMed performance specs?
Also, the last two bags I bought from the DME were not the usual Respironics filters. They have no letters, and the bag is labelled “Roscoe Ultra Fine Filter for PR System One”. I have not used one yet.

Re: Hypo filter or not?
my hypoallergenic s9/a10 filters seems to have threads coming loose after a short period of use with this aircurve asv. I can grasp the the threads with my fingers. after awhile tiny threads show up in the water tank, or at least I suspect the source of the filaments is the hypoallergenic filter. maybe a bad batch. so i have been changing the filters quite often. never had this happen before.
this resmed dual layer filter isn't sold in the US, it would appear - would try it if it were sold here.

the resmed non-hypoallergenic filters don't catch much of anything. the hypoallergenic ones are better, I think.
I wouldn't cut the resmed hypoallergenic to fit another resmed machine because the hypoallergenic filter might shred apart. The respironics filters are far sturdier than the resmed filters.
