Mask Fitting Problems ResMed Airfit P10

Post by MargaretB » Wed Oct 19, 2016 10:43 am

Hello, I have the ResMed Airfit P10 nasal pillow mask. What is the secret to getting it to fit properly?? Sometimes it fits fine. Other times It doesn't fit properly and I don't know what's wrong, or what is different compared to the times when it does fit. I have watched videos on the ResMed site, but I still don't see what I'm doing wrong. I wash the nasal pillow part every night. Also, how do I tell which size fits me?? I have used the XS and the S sizes so far. I think the S size works better, but there are still times when it doesn't seem to work properly.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Can you explain a bit more as to what you feel is going on when you say it doesn't fit properly sometimes and sometimes it seems to fit just fine?
Does it leak? Does it hurt? Does it move around a lot?

Nasal pillow size is really nothing more than what is comfortable for you and lets you breathe easily.
Too small and the P10 can try to climb up inside the nostrils a bit and that hurts and also can cause the pillow to sort of collapse and make it hard to breathe.
I had that happen with the XS...would wake up suffocating and pull the pillow out a bit and things would be fine for a while and then it would happen again.
Made the switch to the Small size and it never happened again. I can also use the Medium...might even be able to use the Large if I had one to try.
In all the other brands of nasal pillow masks I have been able to use the XS but not with the P10.
So really all you need to worry about is comfort and ease of breathing...if both of those are okay then the sizing probably is working and it wouldn't be unusual to have it where you could probably use more than one size successfully.

Sometimes, the inner part of my nasal pillows deform when I put them on;
and I have to pull the mask away from my nose and reseat the pillows until they are correctly "parked".

examine the pillows carefully, they are double walled, there's a firm inner cone and a soft outer one, it's easy to make the inner cone pop inwards when cleaning the pillows, if that happens, squeeze the pillow across the long part of the oval and the inner cone will pop back out.

here's a video about that, along with other tips: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MylY6a6KXMY&t=1m27s

Hi Pugsy,

What I mean is that it leaks. It doesn't hurt. I don't understand why it doesn't leak sometimes and other times it does. There must be some trick to fitting it that I don't know. I have used the XS and the S pillows so far.

It seems fine when I first put it on at night. It's when I put the mask on again after I get up that I sometimes have problems. I need to get my AHI below 5 or they will try to increase the pressure on the machine and I won't be able to stand it. I had a very hard time getting used to the current pressure (14). I recently learned how to check my AHI on the machine. The lowest I've seen was 6.8. My test was "moderate" (more than 15).

I have no idea what you mean by "reseating" the pillows.... How do you know that the inner part deforms?? I haven't noticed the inner part being any different from one time to another. I have watched a lot of videos on ResMed but they didn't help.
