I had it done during hurricane Fran in Sep !996. In my case a 2 feet dia Pine tree (30' high) tilted and fell down and stopped by the house eave. One of the tree's branches pierced the roof and penetrated into the bedroom ceiling. An arborist stood on the roof and used a chain saw to cut pieces from the tree overhanging the house. He was paid about $2,000. Next, I myself being the house owner, called the electric company for a hoist- mounted- truck. It drove close to the tilted tree, then after sawing it off the roots it picked the trunk and swung it on top of the truck. Next, someone had to grind or uproot the tree's roots. At that time I lost about 40 trees in my yard. Amica Insurance paid about $15,000 for removing the tree that fell on the roof and fixing the damage.

We had two dying maples "topped", which is possible if the trunk is still vertical,
and much cheaper. The trunk can be taken down in pieces by my son.

The tree is down! That massive white oak is no longer in danger of crushing the back of the house! If anyone in Raleigh ever needs tree work done, I highly recommend Curtis Tree Climbing (of course bonded, insured, and certified arborist). The hurricane was just 3 days ago, and to have this tree taken down so quickly was unexpected. The price for taking down the 90-100 foot white oak was just $200. They are now working at my parents' house across the road. I hope everyone else with tree issues is able to get them resolved as successfully as I was. Thank you all for your concern!

I am glad you got it done.
When I was a partner in an Inn we had a very large and healthy looking poplar tree fall over and damage 3 newly renovated roofs. It took days for it to be cut down and months to get the insurance dealt with.

Not really. Last May we had a foot of snow and my May tree cracked in 2 - luckily it missed the roof. It cost me over $1000 to have it removed. There are a couple of scruffy pine trees to close together which I want dealt with but because they grow close to power lines it will probably cost me well over $3000. I have the quotes for it. They got pruned instead and look even more ugly.

She was lucky. Prices can go up dramatically during emergencies. Usually referred to as "supply and demand".
Locally we are still working on rebuilding the town north of here which burnt down in a major forest fire. It has had constant vigilance of the contractors to prevent massive over charging. With every story of sacrifice and heroism you get the sleaze trying to profit as much as they can.

We have a huge cottonwood (5' diameter trunk), that was struck by lightning.
Luckily, it has recovered, but some day, it will need to go.
I have been told about $2,000.
