Hose - sputtering noise
Hose - sputtering noise
at 3:45 am my hose starting making a sputtering pulsing sound. I had recently bumped the humidity to 7 on my machine - it was a cooler than usual night and I felt condensation on my pillow mask. Changed it back to 4 - seemed to fix the problem. Others concur? thanks K

Re: Hose - sputtering noise
SnuggleHose covers and heated hoses help with that problem.

Re: Hose - sputtering noise
Reposition your hose and machine so condensation in the hose runs back into the machine.

Re: Hose - sputtering noise
Do you have a heated hose? If not you might want to be getting one for later this winter when bedrooms can get a lot cooler.
Moisture in the mask itself...that can happen even with a heated hose if the conditions are just right and no amount of positioning the hose will help the water drain out of the nasal pillows if you are in a position where the water just sort of pools in the pillow and can't go down into the hose to let gravity help.
If it gets too annoying and the heated hose doesn't totally prevent it...and you don't want to keep reducing the humidity setting (which doesn't always help anyway if the moisture is from your exhaled breath) there are little hose cozies for the short hose from the heated hose to the nasal pillow and they help keep that air warm so that condensation doesn't happen.
You have several options. See this thread posts number 2 and 3 for those options.

My nose doesn't do well if I try to reduce the humidity setting so I have had to come up with other ways to prevent condensation in the mask or hose in the winter because my bedroom ambient temperature will go to the high 50s or low 60s often and that's a recipe for condensation for sure when someone uses maximum humidity.

Re: Hose - sputtering noise
Gravity, it ain't purty, but it's the law...right?
So water always runs to the lowest point. If my machine sits at 36" high and yet I run my hose upwards at about 20" over my headboard then back down to me - If my nose is at 35" high as compared to the Resmed at 36" - that's where it'll go...right?
Or do people who have purposely put their machine significantly lower to their head ever still get the problem? Ken (not a plumber)...thx

Re: Hose - sputtering noise
Gravity will help if there is water in the hose but it doesn't always help when the water is in the mask due to hose positioning or just how we might be laying on the bed. This is especially true when someone uses some sort of hose management system where the hose is routed upwards over the head. Water can't run uphill.
I prefer to just prevent the condensation in the first place and that way I don't worry about where the hose is or where the mask to hose opening is. Pretty much unless I am totally face down if there is any water in the nasal pillow it can't go anywhere except back up my nose or give me a cold shower through the vent holes.

Re: Hose - sputtering noise
does the sputtering always accompany a rainout - or am I blending two possible problems...?

Re: Hose - sputtering noise
Rain out doesn't always cause a lot of noise. It kinda depends on where the water is and how much of it there is and it doesn't take very much to cause a huge racket.
I have had it in the hose...lots of noise to the point of waking hubby. When it woke hubby there was maybe a tablespoon of water that I poured out of the hose. Not much at all compared to the racket it caused.
Once I got the heated hose I no longer got any condensation in the hose but I will sometimes still get it in the nasal pillows if the conditions are just right and that doesn't seem to be as noisy.

I love my heated hose. I use it all year long.
