CPAP smell-offgassing
CPAP smell-offgassing
Has anyone found a recent CPAP machine that doesn't stink to high heaven?
I have been a CPAP user for 10 years, using the Respironics M Series. Didn't change my machine for about 5 years.
I was recently issued a ResMed AirSense 10, and the air it produced smelled like cheap motel carpeting. Soaking the hose (heated and non-heated; I tried both, but the heated seemed to be worse) and mask in everything non-destructive I could think of (baking soda, OxyClean, detergent) diminished the smell but didn't get rid of it, and it would get worse as the night went on. The smell also appeared when I used the hose I had been using on the M Series, so I think it's coming from the machine itself.
The M Series never smelled like that, but the sleep lab people let me take a sniff of a new one and it also smelled of off-gassing.
I'm used to cleaning my tubes, masks, etc., when they're new, to get rid of the new car smell, but can't figure out how I would ever clean the machine itself.

Are you sure it is new? Did you check the run hours?

Mine smelled new-ish for a couple hours, then just like the old one.

I've had a few new machines... it goes away in a several days, so just adapt. Put an air freshener near it for a week or two. Nobody complains about 'new car' smell in their new car, mostly because it's a a desirable status symbol. Think of your CPAP like that. If that concept is not acceptable then fill a tub with straight Lysol and dunk the machine into it for 24 hours. That'll fix it..

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

I use a sage and citrus car air freshener from Yankee Candle.
The same one has been useful for at least a couple years.
The scent is barely detectable when I put my nose to it, and if I put it away, I miss it.

Today I just got my new Remstar PRS1 Auto 60 and the smell coming through the hose as I tested it did have what is called the 'new car smell'. I suspect that this will go away in a few days.

My truck is a month old. It's actually the first vehicle I've ever bought brand new, and I HATE the new car smell. And yeah, it smells like a brand new CPAP gear.Sir NoddinOff wrote:Nobody complains about 'new car' smell in their new car, mostly because it's a a desirable status symbol.

Re: CPAP smell-offgassing
Long ago, we were looking at mobile homes.
Back in tne seventies, the paneling and carpet were SOAKED in formaldehyde.
Open the door, and it hit you like a shovel in the face.
New houses are similar, but the stench is not as strong.
Funny, when you build it yourself, no bad smells, just the clean scent of pine sawdust.

Plug it in. Let it run. Let it run some more. FWIW.....new car smell these days..... is nothin' like new car smell used to be. (IMO)

Re: CPAP smell-offgassing
Don't use commercial air fresheners - ever. They contain toxic chemicals, they don't have to be tested or approved by the FDA. They are as bad as or worse then your "new car smell". Use essential oils or cooking spices. There is nothing like the smell of apples and cinnamon simmering. (There was once an open house for the place for the place I was renting but I had a lot of baking to do for a charity event so I stayed home and baked. I apologized to the agent but she was like "Don't stop, just don't make too much of a mess" apple pies, cinnamon muffins, banana bread will sell your house faster then any air freshener)
Long ago toys used to smell that way too. The smell reminds me not of a new car but St Nicolas morning and a new doll by the chimney. I can't help it, as an adult I know what horrible chemicals are off gassing but it still smells of St Nicolas Day and Christmas.
