An experienced CPAP user who tolerates it well may not want to pay for fancy features.

Px adjustment is important however.

I'm looking at compact machines as backup and for use on airplane.

Unfortunately the cheaper of Apex models are AC only.
(If a machine is designed to use 12vdc internally, then only a DC cord and DC jack is required.
Otherwise a DC-DC converter is needed inside - space and cost.
The classic RemStar breadloaf machine has a DC jack, for optional simple DC cable (using standard cigar lighter plug).

Many compact models still have ramp feature which I have no use for.
Some have Auto function, some not.

Can anyone advise on reliability of Apex machines?

I believe Apex is "offshore" mfg. Avoid at all costs.
I have an American made Devillbiss Autoadjust.
The AC transformer is internal, and it will run off ordinary 12V DC,
including the power port in your car. (ciggie lighter!)
A quality machine--I would not consider anything less.

"chunkyfrog" is xenophobic.

Apex is made in Taiwan.

Ford's most reliable car is made in Mexico. OTOH a Chrysler PS bracket made in Mexico was a dangerous POJ.

Even US manufacturers botch, for example the troubled throttle position sensor on Toyota cars was made in the US, ones made in Japan were fine.

A key factor is local support with clout in the factory wherever it is. A problem is that in going to countries with lower labour costs people often are blinded by cheap and don't do due dilegence and don't have someone on the ground there to monitor.

Would "chunkyfrog" buy a car made in Canada?
Would "chunkyfrog" buy a car made in the US but having a German transmission, which is common?

My Toyota Prius was made in Japan; my tablet and phone are made in China.
My Airsense 10 Autoset for her is Australian.
I am not xenophobic--my husband of 48 years is Ukrainian.
Some of the best stuff comes from other places; also some of the worst.
Apex is too close to the brand that hurts the coyote.

OK, "chukyfrog", why do you recommend aqainst Apex products, specifically?

Look at the specs; you do know what they are.
Limited data. Got something against knowing how well it is working?
110/220 volt AC only, no DC operation. (Somebody was asking about that--not you?)
Noise levels; it may not look like much, but the decibel scale is logarithmic.
I considered this machine myself several years ago, and ran the comparisons. It lost.

Thanks chunkyfrog, that's nothing to do with "offshore".

As a backup machine I don't need data and other fancy features.
Noise I'm not especially concerned about.

Lack of DC input on many Apex machines is a drawback, somewhat defeats the compactness of it.

I think Apex is Taiwanese, perhaps stumbling around as many companies do especially when new to a market but Respironics does repeatedly with its interfaces - ComfortCurve replaced by then replaced by the one whose frame is the hose, still don't know how to do it well (ComfortCurve is the most comfortable but doesn't stay in place).
