there aren't, but there are three different S9 machines with "auto" on top. only one of the three is an autoset (that would be the 'good' one mentioned above).

You have confused me, I may be a bit out of date but I am (or was ) aware of the difference with regards to Autoset, Escape or Elite with the Resmed brand. But are there now three different machines with "auto" on top?

well, not anymore, since the air10 doesn't have an escape auto, but back in the s9 days:

36001 S9 "Escape" (CPAP Only no data)
36002 S9 "Escape Auto" (No data apap mode)
36003 S9 "Elite" (cpap only)
36004 S9 "VPAP S"
36005 S9 "AutoSet" (advanced autoset mode)
36006 S9 "VPAP Auto"
36007 S9 "VPAP Adapt" (older)
36008 S9 "VPAP ST" (older)
36009 S9 "VPAP ST-A" (older)
36034 S9 "VPAP COPD"
36037 S9 "VPAP Adapt"
36038 S9 "VPAP ST"
36039 S9 "VPAP ST-A"
36048 S9 "Lumis Tx"
36050 S9 "VPAP Tx"
36065 S9 "AutoSet" 'for her' Pink

of course, the pink one didn't really count, and most people would say "hey, that darn thing's pink!"

escape auto: crap, autoset: good, vpap auto: great. more than a few people got screwed by DMEs when they went in demanding a resmed "auto" and had an escape auto foisted off on them.

the above list is also why I'm left shaking my head when someone says that they got a 'res med 9' ..... yeah, uh, WHICH?

Great clarification. If you did happen to come by a pink one you could buy a Dallas cowboys cover from the skinit website to cover up your embarrassment

I almost bought a pink autoset when I was looking to upgrade from my elite, but I waffled too long, and someone else got it. I'm not scared of pink, in any event

but, for what it's worth, this is my vpap auto:

Resmed S9 Auto, with humidifier and long hose and carry case. 2,300 run hrs., Non smoking, non pet home. Was listed At $500, but I offered $200 and they said ok.
We are meeting in a few days so I can see the machine and test it out at a public building.

Is there anything specific I should look for? Is that an OK amount of run hours. I am looking for a machine to leave at my Dad's home as I have to fly to get there.
I'm sorry.. I'm not intending to throw a turd in your punch bowl but did you see this?

Legalities aside, this article wouldn't apply to someone like cardsfan who is an experienced user and is looking for a backup machine. She doesn't need to go to the doctor to set her pressure since she knows how to do it and the one she is currently using works well for her.

Icy- It is perfectly safe to re use someone else's cpap- if you know how to disinfect it, and which parts to replace with new. Hospitals re use equipment everyday. With a new hose, mask, filter and water tub you are all set. Sanitize the machine with alcohol wipes or Control disinfectant and good to go. I had read that article and I disagree with most of it. But thanks anyway.

I have a second hand machine as a back up, purchased from a member here (S9 Autoset). I used it for the first time all night the past 2 nights, just to try it out. My AHI was 0.3 and 0.2. Actually a little better AHI than with my regular machine (Airsense 10 Autoset).

Palerider- thanks for that list. I'm waiting to hear back from the seller.

It is:
SN 23132503499
REF 36900A (this is the humidifier I believe)

SN 23141034898
REF 36003A
The pic she sent me says ELITE.

So it's just cpap mode only, not an auto. Is this machine fully data capable?
And the SN 3rd and 4th digit mean its from 2014? right?

Thanks. Any advice? I do not use the APAP feature. Would this be a good spare machine and at what price would be a great deal? (the original Ad says Auto)

It is a full data cpap mode only machine and yes it was made in 2014. That's the closest we can get in terms of born on date. ResMed would know exactly with the full serial number but we don't have access to those records.

Since you prefer fixed pressure it will suit your needs.

$200 is more than I would pay for an Elite with that number of hours on it...been then I am a real tightwad.
I am thinking more along the $100 line. Now if it had less than 100 hours on it I might open up the pocket book a little more.
The original asking price $500...way too high IMHO.

yeah, that scare blurb all came down to:
In addition to concerns about the hygiene of secondhand devices and masks, the study said that a “secondhand device may deliver a low pressure that is ineffective or a high pressure that is excessive.”
(because we want to keep the settings for machines a big secret).

of course, finding out how to set the machines oneself is trivial, as is following the manufacturers instructions for appropriate cleaning and sanitizing of masks (found in the back of most mask manuals).

So why the eff are public toilets built with doors that open INWARD,
so you have to grab the filthy handle in order to get OUT?
Nobody cares unless there is MONEY in it.

so you can rush INTO the stall when in a desperate hurry?

obligatory germaphobe bathroom comment:
you see people doing stupid shit like kicking the flush lever with their feet, thereby putting unnecessary wear on a bit of plumbing equipment that has to be over-engineered to cope with the added stress of being stomped on, but I kinda doubt they're using their feet to turn the lock on the door... probably don't think to use a bit of TP for that...
