Philips Respironics System One Dial Doesn't Work

My husband needs to adjust the pressure on his Philips Respironics System One REMstar Plus C-Flex. I've seen the instructions for how to do this but run into a problem immediately--when I turn the knob nothing happens. It should scroll through the menu but it just stays on "Therapy." I tried holding down any combination of buttons while attaching the power to see if I could unlock it, but nothing happens. I'm not sure if it is locked or if something is broken. Any advice?

A little more background...we are living overseas and will return to the US in about 3 months. He tried a sleep specialist here but the doctor seemed more motivated to part us with our money than to actually do something helpful. We'll probably buy a new machine when we return home but in the meantime we're stuck and my husband is snoring again and waking up tired. We'd like to try bumping up the pressure just a little to see if that helps.

Scroll over to set up, then hold both buttons down for several seconds. That should get you to the clinical menu.

That's the problem--I can't scroll. The dial/knob does nothing when I turn it.

I'm pretty sure somebody last year or the year before had that same problem with their Respironic's machine and a CPAPtalk member gave them advice on how to fix or unstick the dial. I looked high and low and couldn't find that post. PM palerider and ask him (you'll have to register first)... he's good on that kind of stuff. If you hit a brick wall there's always

I don't remember that one. the dial is attached to a rotary encoder, an electromechanical device that translates rotary motion into electrical pulses saying which direction the knob is being turned. unless, somehow, the knob has stripped out on the shaft of the encoder and so is turning without turning the shaft of the encoder, there's not much I can think of to do, unless one is good with a soldering iron and sourcing parts.

Yes, Respironic's knobs/dials have notches in their sweep (ie. detents).

Okay, I see what you meant, that's another way of asking if the knob is stripped . As I recall last time I popped a PR case, the knob itself had a 'D' shape aperture including a similar shaped metal spring that applied tension between the knob and the shaft. Those are hard to strip even if you try. Anyway, the OP disappeared, therefore they probably sent it back to the DME, screwed up pressing it down and HOLDING, or simply decided to stop rotating their knob from now on. Well, that sounded fairly masturbatory. Odd where these threads go sometimes.

Thanks everyone! Yes, the knob does sort of click when I turn it. I pulled it off to have a look and it does fit snugly on the "D" post so it sounds like I'm out of luck. No soldering iron or spare parts or any clue what to do with them if I did. I guess we'll have to wait until we're back in the USA.

Too bad it happened when you were out of the country. A sleep doctor won't be able to help you much in fixing a machine... try to find a equipment supplier or DME in whatever country you're in . How you would do that I can't say but maybe start a new post and ask for help finding a DME in whatever country your are in; in other words maybe somebody in that country can point you in the right direction (put that country right in the subject line to focus attention). I wouldn't stop using the machine just because your husband can't change the pressure - a slightly off pressure is better than nothing IMO. I just had another thought since you are thinking of getting another machine when you return. Register and send a PM to Grayghost4... he frequently sends his machines overseas and has contacts in many places, plus he knows most of the regulations.
