That’s great they got it all!!!chunkyfrog wrote: ↑Fri Feb 05, 2021 11:06 pmI don't understand how nerves work, but I understand that most get used to it

As for my mastectomy, they got all the cancer (nearly 6 years ago),
and left me with jugs that I can make dance.
Cool party trick . . .
Lol on the dancing jugs.

Re: ghost mask
After 5 years, I have the exact experience. Don't even notice my breathing when hooked to the machine. Thankfully, the mind can quickly adapt to new uncomfortable situations.ChicagoGranny wrote: ↑Tue Jul 12, 2016 3:50 pmMine feels like it is not on when it is.lisajune103161 wrote:Does anyone ever feel like their mask is on when its not?

Re: ghost mask
Nah, that just means it everything's working like it's supposed to. After the first few minutes I don't feel the device or the pressure.

Re: ghost mask
For my ghost/phantom mask experience, I feel the actual outline of where the mask touches around my face like a thin line all around my face. Also around back of head where headgear goes. No tingling face does not feel like it’s sticking out. It is more of a pressure. It’s like when you get a new pair of glasses when you never worn them before. Then you wear the glasses all day but when you take them you feel like they are still on for awhile afterward. My ghost mask comes and goes. I feel it for awhile after I take off mask in the morning, but then it goes away. However a few hours later if I lay down I could start to feel it again even without wearing the mask since morning. And becomes more prominent when I lay on my side. Then it goes away again. I did not use CPAP for two nights last week and by second night I didn’t notice the feeling anymore. Took two days to go away!!dpeterzell wrote: ↑Sun Feb 07, 2021 11:36 amyes obviously.loggerhead12 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 07, 2021 9:01 amNah, that just means it everything's working like it's supposed to. Some questions for all of you phantom mask people. 1). When you experience the phantom mask, what exactly do you feel? Do you feel like your face sticks out further than usual? Do you feel tingling, buzzing, or pins and needles? Is it there constantly, or does it come and go? 2) Is your experience of the phantom mask more prevalent during COVID and these mask-wearing times?
I just started using CPAP 2/12 months ago so I don’t know about pre-Covid. I do suffer from panic attacks/anxiety and had a very hard time using Covid mask. I did it though don’t want to get sick. Being I have panic attacks maybe pre-disposed me to something like this? I don’t know. However this feeling only started very recently about two and half weeks ago. So, I used CPAP for two months without this feeling. I have sleep doc appointment tomorrow. You can bet I’m bringing this up!!!

Re: ghost mask
Thanks for your experience. It does help to know I’m not alone. I’m not sure what I’ll do about this. It isn’t going away and it’s getting more uncomfortable and intense. My sleep doctor doesn’t seem to know anything about ghost mask which is frustrating.elsueno wrote: ↑Mon Feb 08, 2021 1:40 pmThanks for that. My own experience of the phantom mask is that my nose and lips protrude out, as if to embody the full-face mask. I never noticed this until I started wearing masks for COVID. Burt once I transitioned to bleep, the phantom mask went away. When I used the FFM a couple times recently, it came back. Sometimes, the phantom tingles a bit, like pins and needles.Movieman wrote: ↑Sun Feb 07, 2021 7:35 pm

I've been interested in this because this whole idea of body plasticity is related to my clinical research with people who have lost limbs. People who have phantom limbs and can align their phantoms with prosthetic arms or legs seem to do better than those who don't have the phantoms, or can't get the phantom limb to align with the artificial limb. Plus it is just interesting that some people have these 'ghost' sensations -- experiencing the body as beyond the limits of one's skin. It has implications for neural plasticity. (See the classic Phantoms in the Brain by Ramachandran and Blakesee).

Re: ghost mask
Thanks elsueno. I’ve been trying your suggestion since last night and this morning. Not working yet. I’ll keep at it for the week to see if it makes a difference.
I’m sleeping much worse since I started CPAP, had multiple other side effects and now this side effect. I think I was better off before CPAP. We will see what happens.
Appreciate the help!

Re: ghost mask
People with phantom limb sensations have been helped by using mirrors.
Try keeping a mirror nearby, and when unwanted sensations appear,
admire your sweet face--with or without a mask.
