Waking up out of breath after falling asleep on trilogy

Post by Ericstellar » Sat Jul 09, 2016 4:57 pm

I just got put on a trilogy 100. I'm ok wearing when I'm awake but as soon as I fall asleep I wake up in a panic out of breath and freaked out!! I feel hopeless and I have severe central sleep apnea but I cannot wear this machine or a bipap.
I've tried and tried and I just keep waking up over and over exhausted and out of breath.
Can someone please tell me why I cannot use this machine?
Nothing seems to help, I've tried Valium and Atarax.
I just wake up and am claustrophobic and have to rip off the mask. I have been diagnosed with PTSD and believe there could be a connection. Can someone help me?

While waiting for someone with some expertise to come online you should post your settings so they have something to go on.

Not sure of my settings, I was told it was set on full support for this problem of me waking up right after I fall asleep.

You wrote that you are claustrophobic and have to rip off the mask.

The question is what kind of mask are you using?

You may just need to find a mask that is more comfortable and less claustrophobic, such as a hybrid mask.

Trilogy is a more complex machine. The timing may take a bit longer to get "dialed in".
A Trilogy expert should be around in a bit.

I'm wearing a f and p simplus full face mask 400477.
The thing is I'm ok when I'm awake wearing it, and the same thing has happened with several other masks I've used.
I seem to stop breathing as soon as I fall asleep , and it doesn't seem to be a problem with the masks.
Also I've experimented by holding my breath for one minute with the mask on and when I resume breathing I do not have the same panicky anxious freaked out feeling. It's almost as if the process of falling asleep cause a blood flow problem to my brain or some other structural problem related to the process of falling asleep. I've recorded the event and I do not seem to stop breathing for more then twenty seconds. My PCA has witnessed this process through both machines and agrees it seems to be more about the act of falling asleep and not the loss of breath.
I also have to prop myself up on my back to sleep, as I cannot sleep on either side due to orthopedic problems.
I have severe physical damage from a 10,000 pound cement wall that slammed into me and then crushed me for four minutes, two years ago and have had severe central sleep apnea ever since.
There was major damage to both lungs, and I have a bone spurr off of a disc at t7 pushing into my spinal cord.

I also had both first ribs fractured and both shoulders severely and permanently damaged and my right clavicle severely damaged from the impact and have so much pain from my right clavicle and left and right shoulders that I can't sleep well. When I lie down and there is pressure on my back is when I seem to lose my breath, it's very frightening.
My low back also has major spine damage , and all of my lumbar are very damaged.

Eric, I suggest you PM 'Madalot' who uses (or used recently) a Trilogy... it may not be the same one, but if she gets the message she may help.

I think however that what happened to you has had quite an (understandable!) impact to say the least and I'd ask for a referral to a neurosurgeon to look into it now... orthos are great at bones, etc, but neuros know more about nerves and connections, more appropriate with what you've been left with, and you also might want to get a respirologist involved.

Julie-
Thank you ! I will talk to my doctors, I'm not sure if the doctor who prescribed the trilogy is a respirologist, but I think he might be. I was referred to a neuro doc , I haven't got to go see her yet.
I'll pm that person you mentioned, hopefully I can get some advice.
I'm hoping someone who has had the same experience as me will see this!
Thank you

Let us know what happens. When you talk to the neuro, don't just concentrate or lead him about the Trilogy... get a new evaluation on your present state, spine, nerves, etc.

We don't have many trilogy users here....3 that I know of and you are the 3rd one.
You may have to wait a little while to get some input from someone who is familiar with this machine.
I don't know enough about it to even tell you how to find out what your settings are.

Don't you have the user manual? I did find a demo on youtube by researching trilogy 100.

I was messaged about this thread....

Even if you don't have full access to the screens/menus, you should be able to tell us something about your settings. Please either take a picture and screen shot it OR tell us what you CAN see on the screen when the Trilogy is on.
