has anyone done at home sleep study's?
Just have a quick question.....looks like everyone has seem to have had a sleep study done in a lab. My insurance would not agree to have one done in a lab but at home, also I have a 3000 deducible. I did the at home sleep study with the watchpat kit. My doctor says he likes it but they cant see how you do on a cpap with your having a event of course. Just wanted to see if anyone else found out they had sleep apnea this way. Thanks
Re: has anyone done at home sleep study's?
By reading these boards, i know sone insurance companies will not pat for a lab test until you've taken a home test. I do believe a lab test follows in most cases, as long as apnea shows up in TNT home test. I'm not sure how the home tests work, so you will have to get that reply from someone else.

A coworker just had a home study done. Cost him 250.00. The report came back with an AHI of 15. He has made a appointment with his PCP to see he we will write a script for APAP. He plans to purchase equipment online and titrate himself using APAP.

LAgrandpa that's kinda of the same route my doctor is taking. Im getting my machine tomorrow actually. I was just wondering since I haven't seen many people talk about doing them at home. I don't know I find all this very interesting and new!
Re: has anyone done at home sleep study's?
Many people on here start out with at home tests. I did an at home test, for 3 nights in a row, and got my diagnosis from that. Got an auto machine, and had smooth sailing. I have simple OSA AHI around 30 untreated. I never had any other testing. My PCP set my pressure at 5 and I did real good. After finding this forum, learned how to adjust my pressure and improve my AHI even more. But, I was easily treated, had no problems otherwise, and did just fine with the first mask.
My PCP was the one who told me to do at home testing. (all I said to him was "My husband says I snore".)

Ask what type of machine the will give you to do the home sleep study. I've seen videos showing machines with electrodes you need to attach and a belt for your chest. The machine my GP gave me to use was only a headpiece. It was trash! It stopped working after 2 hours. I paid the copay at the time because I didn't know better but I complained to the doctor at my next visit. He is reimbursing me by not charging me visit copays but he still got the insurance money. I went to a pulmonary doctor without a referral (I don't need one for my insurance) and was sent for a proper sleep study and follow up titration.

I did mine at home. Mine had the electrodes that come out of two boxes on the chest and hook up to parts of the body. It also had an oxygen monitor that was on my wrist that connected to my finger. I didn't qualify for an in-lab study because insurance said that I didn't have any co-morbidity issues that would lead to sleep apnea, even though I was overweight. Test showed that I had 86 events an hour and my oxygen dropped to 81%, so they can take their co-morbidity issues and shove them.

Health insurance has become such a joke. What do they really even do anymore?

Atmosphere00, there are a few members who did a home study with the WatchPAT. They were from Kaiser in Calif. The member Janknitz was one of those who used the WatchPAT. See her post here:

So when and how are you going to try the machine?

Re: has anyone done at home sleep study's?
Because I didn't have 2+ "risk factors" my insurance denied an in lab sleep study and follow up titration.
My home sleep study was for 7 hours and consisted of a small walkie-talkie like device that was strapped around my chest and belly button under a fitted tank top. I wore a canula connected to the device to monitor breathing and an oximeter on my finger.
My AHI was 76.3 so with severe OSA my insurance just approved an APAP in lieu of a titration study. It took 6 months from being referred to an ENT to picking up my APAP from the DME. Hopefully your journey doesn't take as long!

Home sleep study is all I ever had. Was diagnosed and got all set up, but educate yourself here - you won't get much from the dr or DME!!
