Cpap use and fluid on eardrum

Post by AussiePeter36 » Tue Jun 28, 2016 1:38 am

G'day,

Long time lurker, first time poster here. I am fairly new to CPAP, I was prescribed an older Resmed Autoset S9 for obstructive sleep apnea and have just started managing to use it all the time, every night after a 3 month struggle. I feel so much better, with a lot more energy. I am not falling asleep on the way home in the car, it's just great. The only issue I have is that I feel a bit dizzy when standing up after a good nights sleep. It usually goes away after half an hour - this has gone on for three weeks. So I went to the Doc yesterday and she gave me a thorough check-up and checked my machine data. She said it was all fine and the problem is caused by fluid that she can see on my left eardrum area. She said to go home and "pop my ears".

So I did that yesterday and no fluid came out, nothing changed. Does anyone have any home remedies for removing water on the eardrum? I will fork out the money to return to the doctor if remedies I discover don't work.

Thankyou for any help with this.

Pete.

I've also got the S9 and have started to have this problem. I didn't attribute the issue to the machine but to my cervical collar. I used a different one and thought I might have put my neck slightly out of kilter. I improve during the day. Let's see if anyone else posts this issue.

One thing I can say is that I don't have fluid on my eardrum. I had an ear canal impression made last Friday and was told my ears were all clear (I clean them with 6% hydrogen peroxide every three months).

Good gawd, what kind of doctor said this? And did you use the microwave, an air popper or a stove-top popper?

You could try putting some drops of 70% rubbing alcohol in the affected ear. In some cases, this will evaporate the water.

Get out of the bed slowly. First, roll onto your side and then slowly sit up on the edge of the bed for a few seconds. Then stand up slowly.

Oh goodness....find yourself a new doctor. I am a retired audiologist....do you have fluid behind your eardrum, i.e. in the middle ear cavity itself or fluid in front of the eardrum, in the ear canal...such as in swimmer's ear....they are treated differently. Since she told you to pop your eardrums, I am guessing it is in the middle ear cavity and you are having trouble with your Eustachian tube (the tube that ventilates the middle ear) opening and causing inflammation. When you "pop your ears" you are forcing this tube to open. If it isn't opening normally (that happens when you yawn, chew, etc), you get increased pressure in your middle ear, like when you are ascending in an airplane. If the pressure doesn't regulate, you can get inflammation and fluid from the tissues can accumulate. Sometimes a mild decongestant helps. If it is just water from swimming or showering, you can get over the counter drops. If it is an infection, you need meds.
Given enough sleep....I could rule the world.

I was wondering the same thing. Is the fluid on the inside or outside of the eardrum. If it's inside I would think decongestants could help. Also elevating the head of the bed so gravity will help. That doctor seems like he doesn't want to be bothered unless your ears become infected.

My exhusband had a bad ear infection and when I brought him to the doctor they actually pierced his eardrum in the office. It was so painful I thought he was going to jump that doctor right in the office. Young children get tubes put in their ears.

Are you by any chance diabetic? Some diabetics have the same issue as you. Dr. Bernstein wrote about it in his book, The Diabetes Solution.

Dr. Bernstein will participate in another 60 minute Teleseminar and Webcast on Wednesday June 29th (tomorrow), 2016, at 7PM CST, 8PM EST, 6PM MST, 5PM PST designed to answer your most important questions concerning diabetes and his thoughts on the latest developments in this area. The seminar is FREE but participation will be limited and you must register.

My question: is it correct that you can suffer from Diabetic Neuropathy even if you are not a diabetic, and if you have the neuropathy how to treat it?

That would be a good question to submit to Dr. Bernstein. Have you had an A1C test done? Do you know what your blood sugar is? Any time your blood sugar goes over 140 you could be doing damage to your body. If you eat a lot of carbs you could be nibbling away at your body. So I would say yes, even without an official diabetes diagnosis, you could have neuropathy. You would treat neuropathy by keeping your blood sugar within normal range.
