Throat irritation

Post by Shaun80 » Thu Jun 23, 2016 7:26 pm

I'm currently using a full face machine with heated humidifier, last few months I've been having throat issues.... Not sore throat but more of a dry throat that lasts all day...what can I do?

Give us some info to go by... what machine - all the words you can find on it please - are you using? And which full face mask? And what are your pressure settings (or setting if you're only on plain Cpap rather than Apap. You may well have a mask that doesn't fit well so mouth breathing and leaky mask will dry you out, but with no more info here it's hard to advise. Post again in this thread.

You are most likely breathing through your mouth.Even with a FF mask, breathing through your mouth can cause a throat irritation. Try increasing your humidity and see if that helps.

Any change in meds lately that might be causing the mouth/throat to dry out more than usual?
Having any nasal congestion lately that might cause the mouth/throat to dry out more than usual?
What humidity setting are you using?

Oh...the setting of 8 is for the humidity...I thought it was the pressure setting.
That's all it will do that's for sure. These humidifiers aren't/weren't really designed to rehydrate the mouth. They were designed to help hydrate the nasal cavity which is much smaller than the oral cavity.
Lots of full face mask users complain of dry mouth/sore throat even with maximum humidity being used. It's usually the mouth breathing that dries out the oral cavity. Some people just find that their mouths get dry easier than others. They end up having to use one of those products designed to help with dry mouth.

Since you didn't have a problem until recently I wondered about meds or congestion because maybe the congestion was causing you to mouth breathe more than usual or some meds will dry out the mouth.
Since that is ruled out I can't think of anything else to cause it to change unless something else in your health has changed.

How is the water level doing in the humidifier...using much water at all?
What is your ambient bedroom humidity...has it changed any?

I am fast running out of ideas...and the fact that you say it persists throughout the day is troublesome.

My apologies......Only med I take on a regular basis is for blood pressure....been taking that for awhile never had issues tho.... But the issue started maybe a week or so after using the machine... I fill the container to max but by the setting being high its empty by morning most of the time....no changes in the bedroom humidity.....

Well if the water is nearly gone in the AM then we know the humidifier is cranking out the moisture and that's not at fault.

Only thing I can think of is that maybe you are simply mouth breathing more now than you used to for some reason or other.

Sorry but I am fresh out of ideas. Normally the standard mouth breathing dry mouth is easily fixed with just drinking some water in the morning.

And that's as likely a result of too high a humidity setting as anything... you need to address the mouth, not just the water.
