Re: Be honest, how is your diet?
We eat a balanced diet of protein, vegetables, fruit and very few carbs or processed foods. The few carbs we eat are all from whole grains. My wife has lost over 40 pounds and is no longer diabetic. I started eating like she does about two months ago and I am down over 20 pounds. We have recumbent trikes and ride almost every day. Due to the screwy weather this year, we did not start riding as early as we normally do. We are currently doing 8 miles a day which is pretty good considering the trikes have 20 inch tires.

Re: Be honest, how is your diet?
McDougall? Yes, crazy man.
I sometimes lurk in his community forum because it's the exact opposite of low carb and paleo. I think it's important to know both sides (and in many ways they are both sides of the same coin), but also for amusement. Often they are saying the same things about "us" as we say about "them"--it's a good reality check, for me. I am not unbiased, but I try to see all sides.
Some things, though, just make me shake my head. Some of the members there want to get their LDL cholesterol down to almost nothing. Yikes! Our bodies make LDL for a reason, and studies show higher all cause mortality, infection and cancer in people with the lowest LDL levels as we age. And their fear of fat is downright comical--they eat all those veggies with no fat to help their bodies use the vitamins that depend on fat to metabolize properly. They even worry about the small amounts of fat naturally present in grains! Meanwhile, McDougall thinks that there's nothing wrong with a blood glucose level of 300.

All jokes aside, just so so folks know, because my ratios are excellent, I am not worried about it.

Re: Be honest, how is your diet?
I don't post there. I'm not going to convince them, they aren't going to convince me. It's just interesting to see the world from their point of view.
McDougall went off on someone asking him some legitimate questions, and even the people there told him that it wasn't appropriate. He can be very nasty. I'm interested to hear what he says on the "Latest in Paleo" podcast which should be up soon. The host is now calling himself a "pegan" (Paleo + Vegan) so he's more receptive to the vegan side of things, so it will be interesting to hear what McDougall has to say when he doesn't have to play defense.

This is my story to a 'T." And about 3 weeks ago I did "tighten" thing up.Janknitz wrote:I'm battling a few pounds that have crept back on in the past year--a bit of carb creep and stress for sure.
I generally eat pretty well--low carb, high fat, paleo style. But I've been indulging a little here and there--a small potato, a bit of rice or quinoa or legumes that are doing me no good. Time to tighten things up again.
Mostly though, it's eggs, fish, meat, and lots of veggies, a small amount of fruit (mostly berries), fermented foods. I try to keep the foundation solid.
49er, my cholesterol is over 200 too with a great lipid profile (except my Lp(a) which they tell me I can not do much about...it's genetic).

Re: Be honest, how is your diet?
I could stand to lose about 60+ pounds maybe as much as 70.
I'm rather strong and big boned ( meaning if I suck it in I don't look half bad ) but I still have too much fat around the middle and I don't have a lot of endurance though I'm very strong.
I think my current diet is fairly healthy but my portion sizes are too big. It's hard to cut back when you like to eat.
Lunches for me consist of fresh fruit "apple & Orange" with a simple sandwich thin wrap bread or thin slice bread. One cheese stick and I drink a lot of water.
I don't always get breakfast. Though that may be a hard boiled egg and a very small yogurt drink for the pro-biotics.
It's when I get to dinner that I often stumble. With both portions and time. We usually eat later then we should sometimes as late as 9:30.
Dinners are usually some type of protein. Chicken, or pork chop baked with just a bit of seasoning. Some times we eat beef but not often. Then I'll have steamed veggies like broccoli or some other northern blend.
We also like brussel sprouts or lima beans. My wife was just officially diagnosed with Diabetes so we'll be looking at cutting back on carbs but we would usually have some rice on the plate or potatoes or something starchy.
A 4 years back I went on a Protein / cliff bar diet.
I was eating a protein shake for breakfast - 140 cal
cliff bar at 9:30 for snack - 210 cal
heavy protein bar for lunch 20+ grams - 280 cal
cliff bar at 3:30 for snack - 210 cal
and a dinner that constituted a simple protein like chicken breast cooked simply with spices and seasoning but no salt or fish cooked the same way. Followed up with a large mixed green salad with no dressing or bread. - under 1000 cal
on weekends I would break things up and eat out at least once - it was my way of keeping my metabolism guessing. no idea how many cal - lots more then above
I went from 280 pounds to 220 and I felt awesome though I had lots of family telling me I was crazy that I wasn't eating enough real food etc. etc.
I don't think I'll be going back to my protein bar diet anytime soon but I will be trying to cut back on how much I eat and carbs a bit - and adding bike riding again to get my endurance back.

Re: Be honest, how is your diet?
You might find this interesting: https://intensivedietarymanagement.com/ ... weight-ii/LSAT wrote:Eat ANYTHING....in moderation.
Prticularly:
[/Sometimes these results are interpreted as the belief that everything can be eaten in moderation. This does not even begin to address the complexity of weight gain in the human subject. It is essentially a cop-out answer. It is a deliberate attempt to evade the hard work of searching for dietary truths. For example, should we eat broccoli in the same moderation as ice cream? Obviously not. Should we drink milk in the same moderation as sugar sweetened beverages? Obviously not. The long-recognized truth is that certain foods must be severely restricted. This would include sugar sweetened beverages and candy, for instance. Other foods do not need to be reduced in any way – kale or broccoli, for instance. Other foods, may be best taken in moderation – animal meat.
Others have erroneously concluded that ‘it is all about the calories’. Actually, it is nothing of the sort. Calories are only a single factor in the multifactorial disease that is obesity. It seems to be a default answer, but it has already been shown to be disastrously incorrect. After all, caloric reduction has proved itself a dismal failure over the last 50 years. Low calories diets have been tried again and again. It failed every single time.
There are other answers that are not really answers. These include, ‘There is no best diet’ or ‘Choose the diet that suits you’ or ‘The best diet is one you can follow”. If supposed experts in nutrition and disease don’t know the right diet, how are you supposed to? This is intellectual laziness at its very worst, revealing a stunning lack of imagination about the problem of obesity. Does this mean that following the Standard American Diet is the best diet for me, because it is the one I can follow? Does this mean I can eat a diet of sugared cereals and pizza? Obviously not. ‘Experts’ who are too mentally sluggish in the quest for truth reach for the facile and incorrect answer that ‘All diets are equal’. This pure intellectual laziness is unacceptable. We don’t need another ‘expert’ give us the lame-duck answer “All diets work. Do whatever you want”.

I'm about 10 pounds over BMI ... (definitely not obese)...and weight has been stable for about 7-8 years. I'm active and I'm not planning to change anything regarding my diet.

Re: Be honest, how is your diet?
I am naturally suspicious of vegans; unless they are Adventists, whose faith {IMO} gives them a "bye".
I respect their beliefs, and am impressed by their research, which directs them to a healthy diet;
Even though it is not a diet I would follow--unless as their guest.
