Nose stops up

Post by jadssr40 » Sun May 22, 2016 8:28 am

I am on my second cpap machine since '05. From the very start one nostril stopped up during the night, waking me up. Now it's to the point both nostrils stop up and I wake up very fatigued. Higher humidifier settings do not help. Any experienced suggestions.

Some of us are unable to wear any cushion style mask that puts pressure on the upper part of the nose.
Like me, the slightest pressure causes instant puffing up of nasal tissues.
I find that nasal pillow masks allow me to breathe unimpeded.
When congestion rears its ugly head, I will use a Breathe Right strip, which spreads things out.
I am only guessing here, as your equipment does not appear.
You would benefit greatly by registering and filling out your equipment so we can figure this out.

Turn OFF the humidifier for a couple of nights and you should be fine. It often causes congestion if not needed where the humidity is already high enough.

Get a check for deviated septum. Try nasal rinsing and maybe Flonase. But like others have said not everyone needs humidity, it bungs me up in minutes, passover is just right for me.

Is Flonaise safe to use every night? I didn't think so cause I used Afran some time ago for a few nights and I slept great, however, after a few nights my nose was stopped up all the time, even during the day. I wonder if Flonaise will do the same thing?

Flonase is safer, not as likely to backfire as Afrin does, but do investigate nasal rinses with your pharmacist.

Hi Jadssr40,

Usually, nasal steroids can be used long term as they don't have the rebound effect that Afrin has when used after 3 days.

Reasons for not using it at night is in certain people, it may cause insomnia. In that case, you are better off using it in the morning.

Also, keep in mind that while for some people, Flonase works quickly, most nasal steroids take quite a while to start working. So what might happen is even if it doesn't cause insomnia by taking it at night, your nose still might feel stopped up until the drug starts hopefully improving your situation.

Of course, check with your doctor to make sure that using nasal steroids is right for your situation.

I use half dose - one dose every morning, not two every 12 hours and keep the spray on the edge of my nostril so I swallow less of it. I also rinse most days before applying. I rest my nose one week every six months or if I get nose bleeds.

You may not need any added humidity in Corpus Christi. Experiment.

If that doesn't solve the problem, then see an ENT. On your first visit, he should perform an In Office Nasal Endoscopy & Laryngoscopy and possibly some allergy tests. ---> http://www.tampaent.com/treatments-nasa ... el-fl.html
