Chapped Lips

Post by Tinsy » Sat Apr 30, 2016 8:32 pm

Hi, Just wondering if anyone experiences chapped lips from using CPAP and if so what do you use to help clear this up?

Do you have a humidifier? What mask do you use? It could be mouth breathing drying you out.
Don't use something like vaseline as the petroleum doesn't react well with cpap and can make u bill, some kind of pneumonia. But once you get up lip salve will be goodn- baseline isn't actually that good anyway.

Seriously chapped lips and nares were one of my biggest adjustment problems when I started CPAPing. I posted about it in chapped lips and chapped nares and got quite a few high quality suggestions that went beyond "use chapstick".

In my case, chapstick (more more correctly, non-petroleum based chapsticks of all varieties) would sometimes take the edge off the problem, but my lips and nares were getting more and more severely chapped in spite of slathering chapstick on my lips every night before bed.

It's also important to realize that using a humidifier may not make much of a difference: The chapping is usually caused by air/wind blowing across the affected skin. In my case, my lips were and still are very sensitive to the exhaust flow from the mask. That exhaust flow can hit the bedcovers and bounce back towards your face. And when it does, it can cause pretty severe chapping if you're prone to chapped skin in the first place.

I'm five years into PAPing now and I still tend to slather Badger Balm on my lips everynight. If I forget, I'm apt to wake up with some chapping. If I forget two or three days in a row, I'm apt to wind up with some pretty serious chapping.

What are you trying to say?

It's true that petroleum based products, which include plain old ChapStick, can degrade the silicone in the masks a bit quicker. But I know of no connection between using vaseline or chapstick and getting pneumonia, regardless of whether one is or is not using a CPAP.
But once you get up lip salve will be goodn- baseline isn't actually that good anyway.
Again, what the heck are you trying to say here?

Are you trying to say that the OP should give up lip salve? That's bad advice: Giving up lip salve will leave the lips fully unprotected, and that can (and probably will) lead to severe chapping---as in dry, cracked, red and painfully sore lips and the area around the lips. And that can make your life absolutely miserable and make it near impossible to get a good night's sleep.

If your lips never touch the silicone, use anything you like.
I buy Chicken Poop lip junk at the hardware store.

Back to the topic of lip salve: I've used both refined coconut oil (solidified at room temp) and Lansinoh (nursing mother's nipple salve from Walgreens etc). Both work fine and get the job done without a lot of added chemicals, fragrances or stabilizers.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

I've used Burts Bees peppermint beeswax lip balm every night before bed for years. Now that I have the CPAP, I just extend that over my upper lip and around the nose, which helps the nasal pillows stick. good stuff.

Would a good facial moisturizer applied before bed help with the air blowing out from the mast,

,
In 2007 the US Clorox corporation bought the Bert's Bees brand... so maybe that's important to you or maybe not.

I've used a few of their products and they're not bad.
Here's even more commie pinko info (as Jim would say). To view the graphics stem charts right click your pointing device (mouse etc), then click 'view image' and that'll make them large enough to read.

Thanks for pointing out the typos - 'petroleum can make you ill' - lipid pneumonia - I can't find a better link just nowhttps://www.respshop.com/blog/2013/03/12/risks- ... pap-masks/

'But once you get up lip salve will be good - vaseline isn't actually that good anyway' - as it is more of a barrier than a moisturiser.

Edit to add this is maybe a more useful link? http://www.mayoclinic.org/petroleum-jel ... q-20057784

Don't forget the goto product for chapped nares. Lanolin is good for chapped, nose, nipples, lips, anything!

My go to products are Badger Balm at night and Burts Bees or other non-petroleum based chapsticks in the daytime as long as the lips are not too badly chapped. I've recently discovered coconut oil, and that also seems to be pretty good. But if the lips get really badly chapped, Vaseline is the only thing I've found that lets mine heal.

It's important to realize that too much external moisture (from licking the lips too often or from mask rainout) can cause chapping and irritation almost as easily as air blowing on them. And why Vaseline seems to work best on allowing my severely chapped lips to heal.

I have tried everything to stop my lips from being chapped. I have the nasal pillow and the holes in it blow on my lips all night and everything I have tried has been working. I don't know what else to do.
