stomach snoring?
Hi, everyone. I am new here. I haven't even been diagnosed with sleep apnea yet but I and doctors are convinced that is what is going on. I am scheduled for sleep study soon.
Last night something new happened for the first time that sort of has me worried. As I was going to sleep it seems the valve into my stomach suddenly relaxed and opened up and suddenly I was "breathing" in and out of my stomach. This also made a snoring sound. I do have GERD too. Has anyone else had this experience?

Re: stomach snoring?
The valve into your stomach is at the bottom of the esophagus and opens when food goes down. It's called the lower esophageal sphincter. Gerd does affect the sphincter.

Re: stomach snoring?
Thanks. I know snoring is caused by relaxation of soft tissue in the airway, and I was wondering if anyone has had this problem extend to the stomach? I never had that experience before, but then again I only realized i was snoring recently, never recognized it before.

ya know, stomachs don't work that way...amity wrote:suddenly I was "breathing" in and out of my stomach. This also made a snoring sound.

Ah, a comedian!palerider wrote:ya know, stomachs don't work that way...amity wrote:suddenly I was "breathing" in and out of my stomach. This also made a snoring sound.
But really, if I didn't agree with you I wouldn't be on this forum trying to get insight into this.
It did happen just that way. My stomach was open long term, sphincter totally relaxed for around 30 seconds, until finally I sat up. And with every breath air was moving in and out. Of MY STOMACH!
So, I'm guessing this is foreign territory to everyone who has seen it so far, which I think is around 50 views.
I go back to my doc in a couple of weeks and I suppose I'll live and can ask about it then.
Thanks for your help, everyone!
Re: stomach snoring?
there's nothing to make air go into and out of your stomach, and it's highly likely that if your esophageal sphincter HAD been totally relaxed for 30 seconds, you'd have had gastric juices coming up and burning your throat.amity wrote:My stomach was open long term, sphincter totally relaxed for around 30 seconds, until finally I sat up. look elsewhere for whatever happened.

On the bright side, since starting treatment, I have been able to come off Prilosec, PepcidAC, etc., after suffering for many years with GERD, acid indigestion.

Are you even using CPAP therapy? I can't find where you had mentioned that.amity wrote:Hi, everyone. I am new here. I haven't even been diagnosed with sleep apnea yet but I and doctors are convinced that is what is going on. I am scheduled for sleep study soon.

Re: stomach snoring?
I think I am headed for either a fundoplication or Roux en Y surgery, not sure which. I do have Barrett's esophagus now (pre-cancer) so need to get it seen to. If I get a CPAP I hope it doesn't force air into my stomach. Is that ever a problem, anyone?

Oh, so you're not on CPAP.amity wrote:I think I am headed for either a fundoplication or Roux en Y surgery, not sure which. I do have Barrett's esophagus now (pre-cancer) so need to get it seen to. If I get a CPAP I hope it doesn't force air into my stomach. Is that ever a problem, anyone?
But, if you get your other situation fixed and still need a CPAP, the air swallowing probably won't be an issue after that.
Good luck.

Re: stomach snoring?
By the way, to answer your questions, YES, I do have sleep apnea almost certainly, i wake myself up snoring most nights, so am going for a sleep study and probably CPAP too of course. Sleep study is coming up within a few weeks, while I am getting prepped for surgery, which will probably happen in July.
