Overnight train, riding coach, any recommendations?

Post by cathyf » Thu Mar 31, 2016 10:01 pm

Next weekend I'm traveling with my daughter on a college visit, and both ways it's going to be an overnight train trip in coach. Any hints? I'm planning to bring a multi-outlet extension cord, so that I can say to the other train passengers, "If you let me plug my cord in then I can plug in my CPAP and there will be 4 more outlets to plug in cell phone chargers."

Hi Cathy, are you sure you will need your CPAP in coach? It's my understanding that many people don't need CPAP while sleeping in an (semi) upright position.* Those seats don't recline too far. Did you check with Amtrak? It seems to me that on some routes/trains, the coach cars have outlets, and on others, they don't. You could always splurge for a sleeper. The cost varies depending on when (in advance) and for what day(s) of the week it is booked, but the base is approximately two ride for the price of three coach, but meals for two are included. https://www.amtrak.com/home

I wish! My O2 levels drop like a brick as soon as a doze off sitting up! Plus I have sat beside people snoring like a truck in buses, trains and planes.

While not as bad as BlackSpinner, when I dose off in a chair anything more than a quick light sleep has me waking up with that familiar I-just-had-a-bunch-of-apneas brain fog, so I'd rather not risk it. We are going out on Thursday night, staying in a hotel on Friday night, and coming back Saturday night, so at least it won't be two nights in a row on the train...

Same here.

Dangerous misinformation.

Since I wind up packing while the bullfrog grabs 40 (or 400) winks,
He is wide awake while I am drowsy about halfway through a long road trip.
Then I plug my Intellipap into the lighter outlet, recline my seat, and nap.
He wakes me when my navigation skills are needed. ---Or he needs a cold Dew.
(Remember, I'm the map geek.--and apparently, the bartender)

Yes, of course. Thanks for pointing that out.
