Hello, new user here
Hello everyone,
I wanted to introduce myself. I was recently diagnosed with OSA and just got the cpap yesterday and used it for the first time last night. I have not downloaded the Sleepyhead software yet but will try to do so in the next few weeks. My computer is old so may wait until we can get a new one to do that. For now I will use the ResMed app.
I haven't seen my doctor since I had the titration part of the Sleep study. My appointment is Wednesday. It should have been two weeks ago but he was sick that week and was on vacation last week. However, he had already called in the prescrition, because Apria called me last week to set up an appointment. I already knew I was taking the day off yesterday off for Good Friday and they were able to fit me in at 9am. The lady at Apria was very good about showing me everything about the machine and the mask they were giving me. Turns out she lives in my town, too. Small world.
So first night was ok I guess. I had zero "events". I did wake up a few times because I felt like the mask was moving around but able to fall asleep quickly again. I actually took it off for about 2 hours (I don't even remember, haha) and only know it was for 2 hours as i slept for 8 hours total and the machine said I got 6 hours of mask time last night. I do remember waking up and not having it on and instead I was holding it in my hands. It said I had a lot of leaks and that could be because i had moved it around a few times overnight, and maybe because I opened my mouth a bit too (I understand Sleepyhead software can show this and you can sometimes differentiate what sort of leak you had based on charts it makes based on your data). I have two other masks that I was given at my sleep study for the titration, one is the same as what I was given yesterday and another one is by Resmed as well but a little different, still just a nasal mask but straps are different so I may try that tonight. But I think that is the one I started out with at the sleep study, and they changed it during the night, I think due to it not fitting right? I was half-asleep at the time and don't remember. I'll figure that out and look at other masks if neither style work for me.
Here is one that maybe someone can help with. I felt the air at the beginning was not as cool as I would have liked it to have been. But by the time the machine ramped up it was cooler, because when I woke an hour later to re-adjust my mask, it was cooler.
I will be buying wipes tomorrow for the mask for daily cleaning. For weekends I will clean whole headgear and hose. I have one of those small pans from the hospital that I can clean and use just for that. When you clean the hose and the entire mask how long do you leave it in soapy water? How do you rinse out the hose - I guess just run cool water through it. Probably use the shower head for that and hang over shower to dry.
Is it bad that I literally forgot all day to take out the water in the humidifier? I am reading posts that seem to say it's ok. I'm just going to top it up. I'll clean it tomorrow. Thanks in advance.

Re: Hello, new user here
All of what you posted sounds normal. As far as the water in humidifier......I use distilled when home and wash the thing out once a week. No issues. I do not dump it every day.

Um, I'm very confused - I registered earlier today on this website and put a picture in the profile, etc. My username is not what it is showing here. It should be Mary1118. I got an email saying I successfully registered. The "user name" coming up is the confirmation code. I don't know why that happened. Anyway since you can't see what machine or mask I have (even though I put it all in the area you select it in the profile) its a ResMed AirSense 10 CPAP with Integrated Humidifier and the mask is ResMed Swift FX nasal mask for her.

Hi Murdock,
Yes, got distilled water from Walmart last night. Cool. Thanks. (I think I got my profile problem fixed.)

Yep, I realized that afterwards! I'm signed in now and reading some other newbie stuff. Thanks.

Tip - don't waste your time and energy washing the hose - there's no scientific or other reason to do so as it never has the opportunity to get dirty. The only thing that happens to it is air coming through the machine's filter to you, and nothing goes back through it. Very many of us haven't cleaned our hoses in decades. And if all you do is use baby wipes on the mask cushion area daily, you should be fine, esp. if you then wash/wipe the mask otherwise weekly.
Re: Hello, new user here
I also took my mask off a few times at the beginning while I was asleep. It takes your brain a little while to get used to having this thing on your face at night. Hopefully as you get used to treatment, that problem will go away. I've been at this for five months and change and now it is just a regular part of the bed time routine. No biggie.Mary1118 wrote:Hi Murdock,

Also when I first started, I was paranoid about using only distilled water. Then after a few business trips I figured out that bottled water is fine, so long as I wash it out and return to distilled water usage when I get home. I still wash my hose along with mask and humidifier about once a week. Just part of my routine. I swish it all in warm, soapy (Dawn) water, rinse it off and let it dry. No issues so far.
Good luck at your titration study.

I dunno if you want to bother changing it, but out of all that you've got in your sig, the only part that isn't redundant respironics marketing speak is "560p"Mudrock63 wrote:Philips Respironics System One (60 Series) RemStar Auto with A-FlexModel 560P - P14572839FEC6 PAP
they've been using remstar for many many years on everything...
all autos have aflex,
don't need the machine's serial number.
etc.

Yup. Haven't looked at that since I registered. Machine may be changing tomorrow. Will be hitting you up for advice, I'm sure.palerider wrote:I dunno if you want to bother changing it, but out of all that you've got in your sig, the only part that isn't redundant respironics marketing speak is "560p"Mudrock63 wrote:Philips Respironics System One (60 Series) RemStar Auto with A-FlexModel 560P - P14572839FEC6 PAP
