Anyone watch Modern Family Tonight?

Post by Thatgirl » Wed Mar 23, 2016 7:23 pm

They showed Cam and his sister having "allergy induced" sleep apnea and needing cpap's. They depicted the CPAP's in a quite unflattering light- showing them being bulky, loud, and having them snore over the machines.

It's a good thing it's only t.v., so everything can be scripted and real life has no plac e on t.v., even the news. By the massive response the show must not be watched anymore. Maybe M.T.V., Had a reality show on in their time slot. Jim

Never watched the show before, but based on the description of what it supposed to be about I thought it was kinda funny. By definition (it's definition) It's not supposed to be serious. Over exaggerating is part of the program.

Definition:
This mockumentary explores the many different types of a modern family through the stories of a gay couple, comprised of Mitchell and Cameron, and their daughter Lily, a straight couple, comprised of Phil and Claire, and their three kids, Haley, Alex, and Luke, and a multicultural couple, which is comprised of Jay and Gloria, and their son Manny. These three types of families are being taped by a Dutch documentary crew who are using them for an upcoming reality-based television series due to air in The Netherlands.

Very true. Perhaps I took it too seriously, but I delayed going on CPAP for over two years after my diagnosis of sleep apnea, and it was because of my impression of CPAP treatment, and what your typical OSA patient is, formed by things like this.

T.V., doesn't model my life, I live it on my terms. I had to go on XPAP to continue living, it didn't take a crowd desision, it came down to life or death, all you have to chose is which option to chose. That's why I adapted fast, it was a no brainer, so I didn't use my brain against my health. No drama, no choice by crowd, just do it right and as fast as possible.

I do archive T.V. as a hobby. Jim

As far as Modern Family, I don't go for social engineering, Married With Children was a much better show. Closer to life as we really live it.

That's definitely the right attitude to take when it comes to starting treatment.

+1

There is very little TV that I can bear. CSPAN channels, NY1, PBS, very few news shows, NFL, college basketball, the old b&w Perry Mason.

We have a dentist here who runs a newspaper ad to push his dental device for sleep apnea. His ad shows a man, with the worst cpap mask possible!! I guess its good marketing for his dental device!!

The stupidest part was that they showed the sisters machine with a giant light on it. Yeah that's super useful on something designed to help you sleep...

Yeah, I was wondering what that was supposed to be.

Too bad these writers have so little motivation to do their research;
and show cpap in a normal light, rather than treating it like a freak show.
They have no idea of the harm they do.

The now cancelled show Happy Endings showed it in a much more positive realistic light. In one episode they showed that one of the male characters (a fit African-American) used a CPAP to sleep and then he met Brent Musburger in a hotel lobby and showed what a great mask he had for the device. No that is not a euphemism, Brent Musburger played himself. I liked this because many of the mentions of CPAP in televsion shows end up as poorly constructed fat jokes in very poor taste.

I watched it and thought it was actually pretty good. Cam's CPAP was a portable Transcend one, which is the same one I have as a backup. I think it's good to have sleep apnea out there as a real condition that needs to be treated. Too many people have never heard of it or don't know that it needs treatment at all. I took it as a positive step for sleep apnea in general that it showed up in a very mainstream TV show.

Interesting perspective! Glad someone else saw it!
