I don't deal so well with negativity...

Post by jedimark » Sun Mar 20, 2016 6:36 pm

This post is a little rant-y, I'm sorry in advance

I appreciate everything done on behalf of SleepyHead project, but I am the sort of person that needs to, on occasions, limit my exposure to negativity, or else I will burn out.. this has happened before, hence why there has been long periods of no program updates. Depression, life, and work have also had a part to play in that too. (My entire extended family shunning me for taking a conscientious stand and reevaluating my personal beliefs doesn't help much either)

I try my best to keep up with what's happening around with the SleepyHead project, but there is no way that I can focus on project development and keep on top of absolutely everything.

Anyway, I've had to make a decision today to remove someone from my inner circles, that I quite expect a bit of flack for. It was someone who has helped me a lot to get organised the past few months, but hasn't fully appreciated I am not an unending well of patience when it comes to putting up with a disrespectful attitude towards the work and priorities of myself and others who volunteer to help with the project.

I am not holding grudges against anyone, I'm just trying to protect my focus on and interest in the SleepyHead project.

I spend an insane amount of time working on this project (70hrs+ a week, in between chronic migraines) instead of focusing on other things I probably really should be doing for my family... like trying to work a normal job and earn an income like everyone else for instance. Right now, my wonderful wife supports us and encourages me to focus my time on this project while my health has not been so great, because it keeps me mentally active, and she sees the good it's done.

To be then reminded that I'm not doing enough, or that I'm wasting my time focusing on components they don't personally feel are important (but plenty of others do), is downright hurtful, and is extremely dis-motivational.

I'm not perfect. I make mistakes. I try to do my best. But I simply cannot allow negativity to disrupt my workflow.

I just don't feel great over this decision today, but I do believe I did the right thing. I share it here, because you guys at this forum have been a driving force in my will to continue making this program better for everyone. I've been slack keeping everyone up to date with things, so I'm trying harder to do this.

Thanks for listening.

Sleep Well,
Jedimark

I'm sorry you have to deal with this sort of thing, particularly for such worthwhile work you are donating your time to.

I just wanted to take this opportunity to let you know how much I appreciate your work. Thank you.

Well, you do have to protect your morale in order to have the energy to move forward. Sounds fine to me.

Just wanted you to know that I appreciate being able to use the Sleepyhead software, it has made it possible to optimize my cpap therapy. Thanks very much for all you've done to move Sleepyhead forward, it just keeps getting better!

I also appreciate all that you've done, Sleepyhead is a great resource for optimizing one's therapy. I wonder if there are people who don't realize that you are not paid to create this software, and that you are voluntarily doing this. Maybe now they will understand why it isn't perfect... to me it's perfect, but then what do I know other than it gives me what I need to optimize therapy?

Jedimark... I can say with certainty that many more people would have tossed their machines in the closet had it not been for Sleepyhead. Thank you for all you have done for so many! With much appreciation!

I can't use Sleepyhead on my outdated tank, but I stand by your effort, and realize the problem. It's impossible to be all things to all people. May you and yours be happy and healthy.

Your effort is amazing, thanks. Jim

I'd echo what others have said. I'd add that life is too short to deal with idjits. Do what you have to, and don't feel at all guilty about it. And know that we all DEEPLY appreciate your efforts on our behalf in creating this piece of software that makes monitoring our therapy so much more useful.

Jedimark,

Being an application developer myself I have to say I appreciate just how much time and effort you have had to spend to build this nice tool. I hope you find some peace with the noise you're getting for putting out this product.

IMHO if you're doing this totally voluntarily at the expense of your family I'd highly recommend you try to market this product or scrap it. For what it's worth I'd be more than happy to pay for this fine application. People sell shareware all the time. I would think the manufacturers of these machines would be very interested in the app. I realize with that comes a lot more pressure and accountability but YOU SHOULD be compensated for the fabulous effort you've put in to create this product.

Thanks again.

Never feel bad about doing the right thing.

Thanks so much for creating Sleepyhead. I believe this will eventually get recognition as a turning point in the history of CPAP treatment.

The Sleepyhead project on Sourceforge has over 900,000 downloads since inception. Something to be proud of and we all greatly appreciate your efforts.
