Horrendous 24/7 burping/gas and reflux from swallowed air

Post by Black Shampoo » Mon Feb 01, 2016 1:10 pm

This has just gotten ridiculous for me, and I'm wondering what other people have experienced and how they've helped. I know that I'm experiencing aerophagia from my treatment because I wake up almost every day with my mouth open and so much swallowed air that I can do massive, trumpeting, fratboy burping contest burps IN my mask, AGAINST pressure! I then spend the first 30 minutes of the day ripping machine-gun farts and long, sustained burps - up to 10 seconds long! - just while getting ready in the morning. It was hilarious at first, but now it's horrible because I'm struggling with persistent and obnoxious acid reflux as well. I've done some reading and all of this, even the reflux, is pretty easily traced back to pressure therapy.

What are the solutions? What can you do?

Here is a link to some general instructions. wiki/index.php/Aerophagia
For more specific ideas we would need to know more about your machine settings, using exhale relief, etc.

TIME

For me it took time for my muscles to strengthen and also got better going to BIPAP, that was one of the main reasons I did a BIPAP sleep study...

There was a thread here about a week and a half ago that helped me. I was having nearly identical problems that you have. Someone mentioned that dropping their pressures helped. At the time, I was in straight cpap mode set at a pressure of 15. I went to autoset mode with the lower number at 10. This has helped me tremendously. I still have reflux issues, but it is manageable. I guess dropping the pressure reduced the pressure against that flapper in your stomach.

Check out the Youtube videos about aerophagia in the Useful Links in my signature line at the bottom of this post. Might or might not work, but they're free to try.
