Well, the desire to experiment can be a good thing and who wants to be on a cpap if there is another way. I tried make shift side sleeping supports and a $200 dental impression thing that shifted my jaw forward, both in conjunction with the cpap. The jaw thing helped sometimes. But for me nothing was a substitute for the cpap -- the sleep study obstructive apneas were pretty high and indicated a pressure of 11 in the last study many years ago. Now I'm on ASV machine that treats clear airway apneas and obstructive apneas, and I probably wasted a lot of time thinking about obstructive apneas only. If you can, get some software set up and experiment some and try to understand the data and what works and what doesn't and ask lots of questions.

I have been on CPAP for 1 year. About 3mths ago I tried a dental device. I thought that if it worked it would be good for travel and camping. After spending $$$$$ I lasted on the device for 3 nights. It was extremely uncomfortable but I spent the each night with it in. The problem was my morning headaches and brain fog re-appeared while using it - something I had got rid of with CPAP. So while my AHI (untreated) was only 17 making me a supposedly good candidate the device was useless, which was very disappointing. As far as making CPAP quieter you should investigate ways people have suppressed the noise. There have been a number of posts of people providing information on such. My wife claims to hardly hear the machine, if at all, so I am not in your camp.
