OA under 10 seconds

Post by bellab » Fri Jan 15, 2016 12:46 pm

Hi,

I'm learning my way around sleepyhead, and now that I know how to zoom in on the graphs I noticed a lot of flow rate flat lines that don't get flagged because they are less than 10 seconds long, but many are 8 seconds long, which feels significant to me. I don't understand why hyponea (restriction in flow) is counted, but obstructive apneas under 10 seconds aren't? Is there a way to set sleepyhead to tell me how many total obstructive apneas I have including those under 10 seconds? (say, 5-9?)

Thanks

Nothing earns a flag unless it last at least 10 seconds in duration. The powers that be had to establish some sort of line in the sand and they came up with at least 10 seconds.

There is a way to customize SleepyHead to show additional flow restricted breathing.
Go to Preferences then the "cpap" tab and in the lower left you can customize it and have what is called "user event flags"

After the first two nights the AHI has been less than 1. I'll pick two nights and give you the stats...

Night A:
AHI 1.33
CA: .12 OA: 1.21 HI: 0

Night B: AHI: 0.83

OA: 0.36 HI:0.48

Among the flagged events are several flow rate flat lines that aren't marked as OA because they are less than 10 seconds.

Interestingly, my sleep study didn't actually show any OA, it showed a lot of hypopnea and other disordered breathing- but sleepyhead is showing clear OA events. I'm going to set up sleepy head to flag OA of at least a few seconds, because really..what's the big difference between an 8 second event and a 10 second event? I would like to see the full scope

I understand your wanting to see 'the whole scope', but to what end? You can micromanage things into the ground just because you can and it's new and interesting, but what will it prove? You can get fixated and stressed by that kind of thing which is not considered significant and then go to great lengths to argue about them, try to change them, etc. etc. but lose sight of the fact that they're not important. Use your energy for something else even if this is new and 'interesting'. You set up paper tigers and then forget they're paper and try to knock them down but are just wasting time (at least I would feel I was).

Informational purposes only, I'm intrigued by learning all I can and examining things from all angles. It's very likely due to the novelty of the whole thing, and soon enough I'll get my fill and move on to something new

I put in the custom flags and while I saw a big change in my pie charts, I couldn't see anything in my event flags or graphs. It says something about it only working for new data, so I'll have to wait to import and see how it looks after that

interestingly, my new flags show around 4-6 events per hour in addition to my AHI, its very interesting to know that I do flat line 4-7 times an hour, even though only 1 or less of these are clinically significant.

Thanks for indulging my curiosity! (dont worry, I wont go fixing things that arent broken!)

Most people do that several times an hour during normal wakeful breathing, particularly if they are concentrating on a specific momentary activity.... it's not anything to be particularly concerned about.
