Hybrid Full Face Masks

Post by epirn » Tue Dec 29, 2015 5:33 pm

I am considering switching from my ResMed Airfit 10 to one of the hybrids. I have been on my Auto Pap now for about 1 1/2 months. I need a FFM because I am a mouth breather. Because of my nose blocking up, it was suggested to me on another post to use Breathe Right Strips which I am doing with much success. I tried nasal pillows for 2 nights prior to using the Breathe Right Strips and had poor seal and increased episodes but I loved them. They were very comfortable but with my mouth breathing they did not work for me so back I went to a FFM. At the time I was using a Quattro FX but have now switched to the Airfit 10 as the FX pinched the bridge of my nose and really compressed my nasal passages. The Airfit 10 is more comfortable but during the night I feel like I have to keep adjusting the mask. The cushion after about 2 to 2 1/2 weeks gets floppy and leaks thus me having to readjust during the night. I seem to only be able to tolerate the mask for about 4-5 hours a night then have to take it off. Since I loved the nasal pillows but need the FFM would one of the hybrids be a good choice? I have reviewed the Amara View, RespCare Hybrid, and ResMed Mirage Liberty. Any thoughts out there as to the best one?

If you're not part of the solution you're just scumming up the bottom of the beaker!

The Respcare Hybrid is the original design and comes with a chin flap which some people hate. I love mine. It also come in a variety of sizes all of which you get. Which makes it more challenging to fit but once you figure out the right combination it means an almost perfect fit.

I liked the Respcare Hybrid but my wife said it made so much noise (the exhaust holes not leaks) she couldn't sleep so I am back to f10 and P10 (depending on my mood and condition of my nose)

I have tried the Innomed Hybrid (has nasal pillows) and the Amara View (has the sort of cradle cushion thing) and of the 2 I prefer the Amara View even though I am a long term nasal pillow mask user.
I found the Amara View much easier to get and keep a seal and I think a bit more comfortable in general...especially in the lower back strap area where I tend to have problems with my neck.

The Innomed/RespCare Hybrid comes with all 3 sizes of cushions (for the mouth) and 3 nasal pillow sizes.
The Amara View you have to select the size (there's a printable template available to get approx size) but if you choose wrong all you have to do is buy a different size cushion because the frame it fits on is universal in size....so not a horribly costly mistake.

I have never tried the ResMed Liberty so can't comment on it.

As with any mask out there...what one person loves the next person might hate and you will have to try it to see which way you are with a mask.

epirn,
I've used FFM's since I started CPAP in 2003. Started having problems keeping a seal. Figured it was due to the large seal area. Found the RespCARE Hybrid FFM. Has a much smaller mouth seal area. It's a combination mouth seal nasal pillow mask. By design doesn't need a chin strap. I switch to it when I have sealing problems. I haven't tried other hybrid masks. Find somebody that will let you try a mask and return if you don't like it. Good Luck w/your search.
Cheers,
otrpu

I have tried all three masks, and the only one I could get to seal properly is the Amara View. I started using it late last week.

Just don't let the exhaust hit the bedding. My cat has no objections to it, if he had he would be sleeping elsewhere.

Yes, he must have been letting the exhaust hit something. Neither my wife nor myself hear anything. And that is with a pressure that runs as high as 18 or 20 many nights.

It is also a sturdy workhorse mask. I am on my second in 6 years.

I do have my old Quatro which I wore last week because said cat managed to hook my nose while we were playing . A very very tiny scratch but it did not play well with the pillows. I was happy to get back to my Hybrid, it seals so much better and is so much lighter!

I am glad to see someone else who is a big fan of the Innomed Hybrid. I don't understand why the mask is not more popular. It has so many advantages over traditional FFMs.

Night after night, my leak rate is zero with my high pressures. And, yes you are correct, the masks do last a very long time.

Cheers,
