Motor Boat Sounds LOL

Post by sleepwiggler » Wed Dec 23, 2015 9:08 am

I switched to nasal mask for a night and had huge leaks the issue was extreme mouth breathing. I know a chin strap should help that. However the big question I have is how to stop my lips from vibrating and making a motor boat sound as my wife calls it. It even woke me up.

teach your tongue to stay on the roof of your mouth, it makes like a little suction area that stops the air flow into your mouth. You can practice with the mask on while awake. It also helps me to try to keep my teeth together. I sleep on my side and prop up a pillow gently under my chin.

A chin strap will help keep your mouth closed but will not keep air from escaping from your lips. You can try this by closing your teeth and trying to breath out. The only way to stop is to keep your tongue at the roof of your mouth with the tip just behind your teeth. Work on breathing through your nose and positioning your tongue while awake. Some people have taped their lips at night while trying to make this a habit. Do a search above on taping for examples.
You will either learn how to do this or go with a full face mask, which ever you are most comfortable with.

I have an FFM now, I just get better reading with the nasal since my pressure is high. I have my bipap set on Auto and the low end 19 with a max of 25 if needed. Some nights the 25 is needed. My pressure from the study was 18 and 22 but that was not cutting so with some help from the board and advise from RT I changed my setting. I am experimenting with what I like to wear better, what gives me the best therapy, and makes me feel the best while sleeping and in the morning.

I have been at this for almost 3 years and I love the FFM better but I think I am going to get one with forehead support and try it. I also like the option of using either so I am working on improving the nasal usage. I just ordered a chin strap and have read many articles on here about taping.

My pressures are similar to yours. I tried nasal pillows, but I leak too much through my mouth. My lips start flapping and I sound like a motor boat. I use he F&P Simplus FFM. It is one of the few recommended by my DME because of the high pressure I use (20-25 cm H2O IPAP)

Tape your mouth shut with some 2" 3M Durapore tape. You can get rid of the chin strap and sleep a lot more comfortable with out it. You'll have 0 leaks.
