sleeping sitting after surgery advice

Post by Denial Dave » Mon Dec 21, 2015 8:20 am

I've been diagnosed with melanoma/skin cancer on my face near my left cheekbone area.

The good news is that they caught it early enough that I won't need chemo or lymph node treatment. The overall incision to remove the cancer is going to cover a significant part of my left cheek. (Approximately a 1 inch diameter area and about 2 inches in length)

Unfortunately that happens to be the side that I predominantly sleep on every night. The doctor told me that sleeping on either side will be forbidden for 2-3 days to allow some healing to begin.

I'm hoping to get is some tips from folks is methods to sleep with my mask on in a reclining chair for a few days & minimizing leaks.

Please don't respond with any sage advice on trying mask X or Y. I can't use a nasal mask, I've tried all the newer FFM's out there and old reliable Quattro has worked for me for more than 3 years. My AHI is regularly under 0.5.

thanks in advance

Dave

The only time I had to sleep like that was in the ER at Mayo's and didn't have my regular mask.
The RT set me up at about a 30 to 45 degree angle and that worked well. it was much better than staying up all night.

You might need to look for an open ring travel pillow--to support your neck and lover head.
I found that memory foam works better than micro-beads, but the bead type may be easier to find.
All good wishes for your complete recovery.

When I had my septoplasty, I slept in a recliner for 3 nights without my mask/machine.

Hello DD,
I have had several times when I needed to sleep in my recliner. I just set my machine up next to my chair, dropped the temp in the house, got a couple warm blankets and slept like a baby. I did wake up kinda stiff from sitting all night but after stirring around awhile I feel better. Not like sleeping in a bed but defiantly doable. Take time to heal, sleeping in a chair not all that bad...

I have slept in my recliner after surgery in the past. Now, due to severe arthritis, I sleep on an adjustable bed so I can raise my head while sleeping. When we travel, I take two wedge pillows we purchased several years ago. I stack them up, then add a regular pillow behind my back. It's not as comfortable as my bed, but it works. If you don't have a recliner, the wedge pillows would keep your upper body raised while sleeping.
