UPS POWER SUPPLY

Post by sleepwiggler » Wed Dec 09, 2015 6:21 pm

I live in an area that have frequent mostly short power outages but there are tines when we have extended outages at night. My question is what size back power supply would you suggest.

I use a CyberPower 1350 for my system that powers the machine and the heated humidifier for about 3 hours of outage.
Here is a link. Other systems are available including those you build for yourself.

After years of using various brands and models, I found these two at the local Walmart.
I think the total for BOTH was somewhere in the $80+ neighborhood. I wasn't looking for long-duration power backup, just a little more than a surge-protector strip to buffer any power blips.
Our power is actually pretty stable, but every once in awhile a transformer in our neighborhood goes "poof". Once, a few years ago, a raccoon decided to commit suicide on top of one. Strange things like that. Since the power is off to everything else in the house, I typically get up and wait till it comes back on to resume my sleep. And, am usually the one in the neighborhood to call the power company.

If your plan is to run your XPAP very long in a power outage, you will find the capacity unit you need will be very costly most billfolds can't cover it, break out a fat checkbook.

A good battery system is a much more logical solution. Jim

Unfortunately for us, ResMed makes it difficult because their system runs on 24 volts, not 12 volts. And the cable used has to provide a special signal to the machine or it won't run, so you can't make your own cable. They charge $70 just for the cable: https://www.cpap.com/productpage/airsen ... ation.html. Then you need to have a 24 volt battery system to connect the cable to and a charger for the whole thing.

The problem with using a quality computer-style UPS is that it probably won't last more than 3 or 4 hours if the humidifier is off - even less by quite a bit if the humidifier is used. If I was going to hook something up, I would do it with the Respironics machine because it's 12 volts, not the RedMed.

If you buy the resmed DC to DC convertor, you can keep a charged 80 amp hour deep cell battery on hand. Total cost of converter. battery and charger will be less than $250. Use a ups for the short outages.

Our sponsor and host, cpap.com, sells the same thing for $84: https://www.cpap.com/productpage/resmed ... hines.html

The cord for the Respironics systems is less expensive and more efficient because it doesn't have to do voltage conversion. Cpap.com sells that one for $30: https://www.cpap.com/productpage/dc-pow ... hines.html

Less expensive, yes. More efficient, probably not.

Quality DC to DC converters. are highly efficient. There are almost for sure a few DC to DC converters inside the respironics machine
