I have used a resmed intake filter and attached it loosely over the exhaust vent, and that has worked for me. the picture is of a Amara View mask with the filter cut in half.

I'd switch sides of the bed with him, then the air would be blowing off the bedside. The hose support off the top of the bed would work if you were a back sleeper. Given that the only other solution would be a rolled up newspaper to the head, if the problem bothers him and he can't live with, I'd put his head in a pillowcase, then he'd be protected.
Could take a cardboard box, put it between your pillows,to block the air, you could even tape your pictures to the cardboard. See how long it takes him to notice you did it. Jim
