Heated Tubing, need your suggestions

Post by Nap Time » Thu Nov 19, 2015 8:42 am

Thanks in advance for reading this. I often camp, sleeping in a hammock. I hang my IntelliPAP travel machine from the ridgeline above the hammock, about two feet above me in the enclosed hammock. As the temperatures have cooled this fall I am finding the inhalation temps to be a little cool in the wee hours of the morning, causing me to wake. I have the integrated heated humidifier for it, but because I suspend the machine inside the enclosed hammock I cannot fill the humidifier part of it with water or I risk a drenching during the night as the ridgeline bounces while I turn in my sleep. I have not needed the humidifier and have not been using it, but I would use it in this situation if it could be used without the water to heat the air. What are my best options? Can I use the heated humidifier WITHOUT the water to heat the air? That would be the best of all worlds. If not, is a heated tube my next best option? If so, which one works best, and is it compatible with my setup? I have A/C available where I camp, and 400 watts (3.3 amps) of invertor A/C power in the boat when I string the hammock in it. Thanks again for investing your time in me!

Or worse yet, water damage to the CPAP machine rendering it kaput.

Not advisable...it will stink something awful plus it won't heat the air the way you are wanting it and it probably isn't real good on the plastic water chamber either.

A stand alone heated hose is what you will need.
I have used in the past, before I got a machine that has a integrated heated those, the Hybernite 2300 stand alone heated hose.
I think it works with all machines and don't see why it wouldn't work with your machine.
It works in place of a regular standard hose.

There may be other stand alone heated hoses out there that would also work but I only have experience with the Hybernite 2300.

Are you using a hose cover such as this? https://www.cpap.com/productpage/snuggl ... pered.html

Can you be sure that is the problem?

I have tent camped with my CPAP many times when the outside temp was 15F and the temp inside the tent was 28F. Slept very well. I never use a humidifier or heated hose when camping.

Pugsy explained your best option. The heater in the humidifier is only designed to heat the water, not the air and it only has to heat the metal plate at the bottom of the water tank a very small amount to increase the amount of humidity.

If the heated hose doesn't do the job, you would have to figure out a way to heat the air before it is drawn into the cpap machine filter.

Brrrr. I have had the cold air problem in my house at temps much higher than your camping temps.
In the winter my bedroom gets cold (like in the lower 50s) and I found that even using the humidifier at max setting that the air was uncomfortably cold and I would wake with my nose hurting/cold.
I think that this is likely another one of those YMMV things that come with this cpap therapy.
It's the reason I got the Hybernite in the first place...the hose cozy helped to some extent but not enough to relieve my discomfort.

Anything that wakes us up is unwanted and waking up multiple times during the night because my nose was hurting from the cold definitely makes the unwanted list. It's fixable though...for some maybe a hose cozy is enough but with my light weight nasal pillow masks I found the added weight of a hose cozy annoying and it wasn't doing all that great of a job anyway...so that's how come I got the heated hose.
This was back when I had the Respironics machine that didn't have the heated hose option but once I got a machine that had a heated hose option integrated into the machine I got their heated hose and never looked back.

Will the heated hose work if you are not putting water in the humidifier? And if needed can you turn the humidifier on without water without burning it? I wouldn't think so but not sure.

The heated hose works totally independently of the humidifier. The stand alone hose is either on or off.
It isn't powered through the cpap/humidifier at all. It's powered by a totally separately power brick and plug.

It can be used with or without a humidifier and with or without water in the chamber and with or without heat being added to the water chamber.

But you still can't turn on the humidifier with no water in the chamber without burning it because that is a totally separate function....makes no difference what hose a person uses...it still stinks.

Sounds like the Hybernite hose might work for the OP with AC power but not for me because I use DC. I was thinking of my Respironics Heated Hose and that just doesn't work.

I am totally stupid when it comes to electric stuff...
Were you wanting something to run off a battery?
I used the Hybernite with my PR S1 550 machine but it was with house electricity...never went camping (don't do that anymore unless the camp has electricity).

http://healthcare.plastiflex.com/the-hy ... -hybernite

I have never thought about using it with power from a battery.
Maybe something at the above link will shed some light on it if that is what you were thinking.

I couldn't find how much power they use in the link but with their plug and play connectors it looks like you would have to use their power brick and inverter. I use a hose cosy now without my humidifier but I will probably avoid the super cold nights. Winter is not my favorite travel time anyway and we choose when we work, so right now the fireplace looks good.

FWIW my Hybernite power block supplies 12VDC with a max amps of 1.25 or about 15 watts.
So, it might be suitable for camping with battery power. Some DIY wiring would be required. A hose cozy would help as well.
